The Digital Patient Health & Innovation function is part of Digital Health R&D and works across 4 key areas by defining our digital health strategies, developing and deploying novel endpoints as well as digital patient solutions to support our full R&D clinical development and commercial drug portfolios in partnership with R&D and IT teams. Our mission is to:

  • Transform clinical development, through development of patient and site centric digital solutions that improve access to clinical trials for all patients, whilst delivering faster and more efficiently for both site and sponsor

  • Improve outcomes for our patients and trials through remote data collection and patient support, providing enriched data sets to support regulatory submissions and differentiated labelling

  • Partner with the healthcare industry to determine how digital technologies can improve diagnosis, access to treatments and outcomes for patients with CKD, Heart Failure and COPD, including remote diagnosis tools and multi-modal healthcare data and AI approaches

  • Optimise real world medication use by patients and deliver digital interventions to improve clinical outcomes with our medicines

AZ’s R&D Digital Health Oncology Organization develops digital solutions to support our development and commercial drug portfolios. These digital solutions range from the innovative and optimized use of eCOA (electronic Clinical Outcome Assessments), all the way through to stand-alone Digital Therapeutics and typically encompass connected/remote monitoring devices and sensors coupled with medical device software to:

The holder of this role will collaborate and partner within an extended team structure across CPTs, Digital Health Clin Ops and PCS to oversee the implementation of digital patient solutions. This role supports the execution of clinical trials and digital therapeutics crafted to augment the efficacy of AZ pharmaceutical products. The role holder will also contribute to defining processes and ways of working for now and the future.

Your key accountabilities will be:

Delivery of Digital Health Strategies

  • Support the development of the Digital Health strategy by using operational expertise across a program(s) or studies as assigned.

  • Accountable for the Operational implementation of the digital strategies approved by GPT within the agreed scope and project budget

    • Oversee the implementation of Digital Health strategy to anticipate project requirements and mitigate risks to project delivery

    • Ensure Implementation Lead understands the project strategy, project priorities and specific project challenges

    • Support staff/team to achieve project milestones and study deliverables

    • Work across departments to support the delivery of projects and organizational improvements

    • Act as first point of issue escalation for implementation issues

    • Ensure Inspection Readiness of digital patient solutions delivered to each study

  • Ensure effective and transparent risk, opportunity and issues management at strategic and operational levels, ensure appropriate reporting according to GCP and AZ processes

  • Develop and manage relationships with internal and external technology and service providers to enable innovation approaches and endpoints to be included in Digital Strategies.

  • Help build a learning organisation: ensure that any learning associated with the programs is shared within the Digital Patient Health & Innovation Organisation

Line Management

  • Recruit, Retain & Develop personnel. Manage performance including feedback and rewards

  • Facilitate skills and capability training to personnel to support their development

  • Ensure personnel have been trained and work within compliance of ethics, company policies and standard procedures

  • Role model and embed a performance driven culture and coach staff for optimum performance

  • Develop and nurture capabilities of our present and future AZ leaders

  • Provide expertise and direction to support direct reports with proactive problem/risk identification, solution building and issue resolution to facilitate achievement of objectives on time and to appropriate quality

Function Leadership

  • Lead and/or co-lead major initiative(s)

  • Contribute to streamline processes for drug/non-drug projects or departmental activities

  • Promote and encourage innovation and creativity

  • Work with Leadership team to achieve accurate resource forecasting and develop solutions to efficiently and flexibly resource studies

  • Ensure quality and compliance to External Regulations and AZ Standards

  • Work across the Hubs to develop global efficient ways-of-working

  • Provide expert input into functional and cross-functional global processes

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Honours Degree in scientific field

  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in R&D and strong knowledge of Drug Development processes

  • Well-developed Project management skills, including managing vendors, budgets, timelines and risks

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross functional setting with internal as well as external partners

  • Ability to challenge the status quo, take ownership and holds self and others accountable

  • Senior Stakeholder management skill with together with proven negotiation, collaboration and interpersonal leadership skills

  • Effective problem and conflict solving skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to deal with ambiguity and create clarity

  • Passion for Patients, representing the needs of diverse patient backgrounds and views in all decision making.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Extensive cross-functional and cross-TA network to rely on and collaborate with to enable Digital Health – Oncology solutions to be effectively embedded within the Drug Development ways of working.

  • Experience of developing products to support patients in AZ’s therapy areas

  • Device, software development and / or clinical project management

  • Comprehensive understanding of dynamics affecting the pharmaceutical industry and needs for transformation

  • Ability to work globally including international travel

  • Line management experience
