Pharmaceutical Technology & Development:

Pharmaceutical Technology and Development (PT&D) are the bridge, which turns brilliant science into actual medicines that help millions of people. We work across the entire value chain, designing and delivering active ingredients, formulations and devices required to support new medicines – from supplies for use in early toxicology studies and clinical trials to developing the technology to ensure drugs can be scaled up for commercial manufacture.

We now have an exciting opportunity for a laboratory IT systems specialist to join our growing Chemical Development team. You will work within a small group of system experts and system super-users who operate as part of a multiskilled and experimentally focused department.

The responsibilities and requirements of the position are outlined below.

Key responsibilities:

The role will support integration of laboratory-based IT systems to manage data flows within Chemical Development, to ensure data integrity and re-usability of our experimental data. This supports our data-driven approach to development, ensuring we are following the science to deliver our new medicines faster and more sustainably to patients

You will be working as a technical expert supporting the deployment, continuous improvement, and future development of laboratory-based IT systems. These systems are integrated with the electronic lab notebooks and include analytical chemistry systems and instrument control systems which manage the experimental data flows within Chemical Development.

Specifically, this includes:

  • System administrative responsibilities working within defined AZ governance frameworks and policies. It may extend to system ownership.

  • Technical support for problems encountered by scientists with the applications.

  • Providing the business link between vendors, AZ IT, system superusers and our scientists.

  • Managing the business process for deployment and ongoing business as usual support activities aiming to optimise the laboratory experience for our scientists.

  • Designing and delivering training and driving standards for system use and behaviours.

  • Defining enhancement and improvement activities to deliver our data to FAIR data standards.

  • Keeping updated with knowledge regarding new technologies to support new business processes.

Essential Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent years of experience) in mathematics, computer science, chemistry, pharmacy or material science, or a related discipline

  • >3 years’ experience working in a pharmaceutical discovery, development, quality control or a corporate IT organization.

  • Experience of using laboratory-based systems which include electronic laboratory notebooks and associated data capture environments, particularly from associated analytical systems or automated equipment.

  • Understanding of FAIR data standards.

  • Experience of liaising with external vendors and corporate IT organizations.

  • Great communication and collaboration skills to bridge the scientific users and IT communities.

  • Ability to set and drive standards for system usage and compliance, including authoring of required documentation and providing user training.

  • Experience of user acceptance testing.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience of practical experimental work particularly use of analytical systems or automated lab instrumentation.

  • Knowledge of the application of GMP and GLS standards in laboratory workflows.

  • Experience of using laboratory-based systems which include electronic laboratory notebooks and associated data capture environments, particularly from associated analytical systems or automated equipment.

  • Experience of authoring testing scripts and protocols.

  • Experience of change management processes.
