An opportunity exists for a Senior Director position as the Head of the Product & Process Design & Development Group for new modality and parenteral products within AstraZeneca’s late-stage development CMC function.

As Head of Product & Process Design & Development for New Modalities & Parenteral Development (NMPD), you'll be accountable for the performance and results across a number of teams working to design and develop formulation and drug delivery solutions for our exciting emerging new modality portfolio which currently includes oligonucleotides, peptides and siRNA but with the potential for other nucleic acid therapeutics and nanomedicines.

Responsibilities:

You will provide both strategic and operational leadership to the Design and Development Unit in NMPD comprising of skills in formulation and drug product manufacturing process engineering sciences to ensure that the unit contributes optimally to the delivery of the AZ late-stage development portfolio.

With previous leadership experience, you'll lead a unit of approximately 40 people via 4-5 Associate Directors/Directors either locally or globally. This will include coaching direct reports for enhanced performance and focusing on team and individual development on an ongoing basis.

You will develop and implement future focused, innovative and digitally orientated approaches to product and process design and development. This will be achieved by using data science, predictive modelling & simulation and artificial intelligence.

We'll expect you to create and sustain a successful Design and Development Unit, which aims to continuously improve in capability, scientific excellence and innovation with a strong focus on new modalities. Through role modelling lean leadership, you will lead the implementation of new practices that enable the group to achieve flexibility, agility, efficiency and delivery.

You'll build solutions to a diverse range of problems requiring complex judgements based on highly developed levels of conceptual thought and strategic vision analysis. We'll need you to operate confidently as part of a global organisation with an integrating mentality to create an organisation prepared for future challenges and change.

Requirements:

  • Advanced degree in scientific field or Bachelor’s degree with significant experience in the design and development of parenteral and oral products ideally with a PhD in a related scientific field.

  • Mastery of Pharmaceutical Science

  • Leadership experience promoting, motivating and empowering a diverse and inclusive culture to support accomplishment of individual, team and organisational goals

  • Significant understanding of the overall drug development and commercialisation process from development and launch, through life cycle management

  • A natural communicator with strong interpersonal skills. Ability to network across a complex, multi-national drug development organization

  • Lean leadership experience
