The UK Policy Lead (Policy Lead) is responsible for defining and advancing specific policy interests aligned to AstraZeneca’s ability to innovate, launch new treatments and improve patient outcomes in the UK. Policy Leads contribute to the delivery of AstraZeneca’s Corporate Affairs strategy in the UK, developing evidence/argumentation and engaging stakeholders with a focus on a specific thematic area of responsibility (e.g. Zero Carbon) and anchoring in one of our priority therapy areas (Respiratory, Cardiovascular-Renal-Metabolic, Vaccines and Immune Therapies, Oncology). In the anchor therapy area the Policy Lead also works with our Patient Advocacy lead to build relationships and collaborations with patient organisations to support patient access to the right care at the right time.
This role is a member of a Policy & Advocacy team of 8, reporting to the UK Policy Director.
The UK Corporate Affairs department consists of Communications, Policy & Advocacy and Government Affairs teams. The teams work closely with both the NHS-focused business in the UK and our wider UK footprint of research and manufacturing, and team members are part of a broader Global Corporate Affairs network across the company that takes a strong interest in the UK as a “home country”. In Communications and Policy & Advocacy teams are individuals with defined responsibilities for particular disease areas and these are all integrated into advancing AstraZeneca as a preferred, solutions-oriented partner.
Typical Accountabilities
Responsible for strategic, cross-functional policy leadership on an agreed thematic area (e.g. Zero Carbon), building personal expertise and engaging and coordinating our internal subject matter experts
Briefs policymakers and policy influencers on relevant developments in AstraZeneca’s business, and identified challenges for patient access to appropriate treatment and care
Represents AstraZeneca on high level working groups, as well as at meetings with officials, parliamentarians and other policy influencers
Works closely with Medical Affairs colleagues and cross-functional teams to identify barriers to patient access to treatment and care and potential policy levers to address these
Inputs to cross-functional business plans to integrate policy activities, with particular attention to patient centricity, health system priorities and compliance restrictions
Supports field-based colleagues to understand relevant policy developments and, in association with Local Market Access colleagues, enables insight-driven engagement of local health systems
Conceives and delivers, with internal and external support where needed, events and projects to develop evidence and/or consensus and advance specific recommendations for policy change
Builds a network of relationships with policymakers and policy influencers to ensure strong understanding of external priorities and developments and ability to inform decisions where appropriate
Responsible for maintaining an up to date knowledge of relevant policy developments and sharing insights internally in a concise and timely manner
Plays an active role in a vibrant global network of policy and government affairs professionals in AstraZeneca to identify learnings from other countries, and share UK practices where relevant
Essential
Deep understanding of NHS Policy and the UK political landscape and processes
Proven relationship development/management skills
Clear strategic thinker with evidence of development and management of robust processes
“Self-starter” with evidence of capability for matrix and cross-functional working
Experience of successful leadership without authority
Desirable
Patient Group experience OR Pharmaceutical Industry Experience
Experience of working within one or more of our core disease areas
Relevant vocational qualifications or equivalent experience
