Pharmaceutical Technology and Development (PT&D) is the organisation that turns brilliant science into medicines that help millions of people. We work across the entire value chain, crafting and delivering active ingredients, formulations and devices for new medicines and providing expert technical support to all AZs commercial drug substances and products to ensure we optimally supply medicines to patients. The Digital Science organisation, sits within Pharmaceutical Technology and Development, where we focus on development of digital strategy, new tools and technologies. Working collaboratively with functions, IT and external partners to transform the way they deliver drug substance and drug product Process Development. The Digital Science organisation has recently centralised Modelling & Simulation skills to create a strategic global team of experts covering a wide range of Modelling & Simulation expertise, with members based in Gothenburg, Sweden and Macclesfield UK.
What you’ll do
In this role you will work collaboratively with a variety of scientific specialists and project managers across a global organization to optimally deliver sophisticated engineering modelling solutions and play a key role in crafting and driving the Modelling & Simulation strategy. The role holder will typically:
Translate sophisticated pharmaceutical process problems into appropriate mechanistic/first principles models and deliver timely solutions
Work collaboratively with experimentalists with different backgrounds to identify Modelling & Simulation opportunities and to strategically direct experimentation
Drive and champion the organizational digital transformation
Establish strong working relationships with the Modelling & Simulation team members and with other colleagues across pharmaceutical Development and technology to enable an impact-driven application of Modelling & Simulation
Develop, validate and implement Modelling & Simulation workflows to be used by the wider scientific community
Crucial for the role
A solid scientific background. MSc/PhD in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering or similar discipline, ideally with specialism in process modelling
A solid knowledge of the science behind process models, and experience of developing/applying process models for development of industrial products and processes
Strong expertise in relevant programming and scripting languages, e.g. Matlab, Python, or similar, and a willingness to learn
Experience of using simulation tools including gPROMS, Aspen, ANSYS, etc
Strong collaboration, communication, influencing and networking skills
Cultural awareness
Desirable for the role
Working experience in the pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical/food/cosmetics and personal care/fast paced consumer goods industry
A broad knowledge of process equipment and process technology
Ability to proactively apply novel modelling approaches to deliver value in the development and manufacturing of pharmaceutical drug products
A rational approach to problem solving, and an ability to make judgements based on sound reasoning
Track record of scientific publications in the Modelling & Simulation area
