Our Cowal Gold Operation (CGO) is a cornerstone asset located near West Wyalong in central NSW with a leadership team that continually focus on embedding a values driven culture aligned with our company vision to create a premier, global gold company.
The development of the Cowal Underground Mine is part of the site goal to produce in excess of 300,000 ounces of low-cost gold a year and extend its mine life out beyond 2040, providing significant economic benefits within the region. A concurrent Feasibility Study is also underway, looking to continue open pit mining past 2035, creating a strong Life of Mine inclusive of both open pit and underground mining.
About the role
Reporting to the General Manager CGO, the Sustainability Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining an effective health, safety, training, and environmental management system to meet all statutory and operational requirements across all disciplines at CGO. They also ensure an effective relationship is maintained, and further developed, with key community stakeholders to minimise any risks to our social licence to operate on our mining lease and leases within CGO control. The Sustainability Manager leads the Sustainability team which encompasses Health, Safety and Training, Environment and Emergency Response and Security.
In this role you will facilitate a culture of safety awareness, and regularly review, report and communicate safety and environmental performance to all employees and other relevant stakeholders. You will commit to maintaining health, safety and security standards and principles, within CGO, identifying potential risks throughout Evolution, as well as understanding and complying with requirements of environmental approvals and relevant environment, safety and health, and Native Title legislation.
You will support the General Manager CGO in the development and implementation of long-term strategic planning for the site, which will include the oversight and management of annual plans and budgets across safety, health and training, environment and social responsibility.
About you
You will have significant experience working within a medium to large organisation leading teams across Sustainability, Health, Safety and Environmental Management disciplines. You will ideally be degree qualified in Health, Safety or Environmental Management, and have an in-depth understanding of the NSW Mining legislation and how to apply it to health, safety, and environmental risk management. It is also desirable that you have exposure to environmental legislation processes aligned to development consent and project execution.
You will have a strong leadership presence, leading by example, and coaching and mentoring others to build organisation capability. You will demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders and promote collaboration, both within your team and cross-functionally across departments and disciplines. You will bring a deep understanding of the mining industry (or heavy industry), along with an established reputation for developing and driving business strategy and delivering results that contribute to the success of the organisation.
