Purpose of the Job
Freightliner UK has a number of rolling stock assets (electric and diesel locomotives and wagons), the focus of this role is to improve reliability, cost effectiveness and maintenance effectiveness of the wagon fleet without detriment to the safety performance of the assets or our people.
Key Responsibilities:
- Be a Safety leader - ensure all activities are completed in a professional manner thereby not inheriting any undue risk, to our assets, our people, our customers or our suppliers.
- Provide rolling stock engineering support primarily focused on the wagon fleet to the production function and wider Freightliner business
- Assist the Fleet Engineer and Head of Engineering Standards in development of Freightliner’s Rolling Stock engineering standards ensuring compliance with the relevant industry and company standards.
- Undertake investigations as required to establish underlying root cause of incidents/failures to recommend actions required to prevent recurrence.
- Monitor performance of Rolling Stock to identify where improvement can be made including safety, reliability and cost.
- Develop modifications, standards and procedures to implement improvements in accordance with Freightliner’s Engineering Change Policy as directed by the Fleet Engineer
- Deliver technical projects to enhance the safety, reliability and reduce the overall costs associated with the maintenance, renewal and repair of the company’s Rolling Stock fleet
- Identify where costs are rising or could be reduced and recommend plans to improve.
Principal Accountability:
- Monitor reliability, safety and financial performance of allocated fleets ensuring adverse trends in performance are identified in a timely manner.
- Working with the Fleet Engineer, identify areas for improvement and develop solutions ensuring compliance with Freightliner’s engineering change process.
- Review and develop maintenance specifications for Freightliner Rolling Stock ensuring compliance with Railway and Freightliner standards.
- Develop fleet modifications to improve fleet performance including the required technical and financial approval
- Undertake management of technical projects that deliver improved reliability, or reduced maintenance costs, in line with business requirements.
- Provide technical support to the Freightliner Procurement and Materials Management team.
- Ensure compliant standards are in place for the provision of material and engineering services used on Freightliner Rolling Stock.
- Monitor the performance of maintenance contractors and direct investigative / corrective action where appropriate.
- In conjunction with the Head of Engineering Compliance and Head of Engineering Standards direct and assist audits where necessary.
- Work closely with the Fleet Managers supporting in technical and production issues including failure & incident investigations.
- Working with the Fleet Engineer, interpret and develop rolling stock maintenance standards for Freightliner use.
- Undertake technical investigations and report on incidents, failures and defects on rolling stock.
- Identify deficiencies and develop recommendations for corrective action in maintenance practices, materials, or design
- On-call responsibility for technical advice and protection of Freightliner’s interests at main-line incidents, including attendance to site where required
- Carry out any other duties as directed by the Fleet Engineer
Experience and Knowledge Required
- At least 5 years broadly based experience of Rolling Stock maintenance is desirable
- Engineering qualification, preferably to HND level in engineering
- Personal Track Safety Certificate
- Suitable computer based skills – Excel, AMS, Database, TOPS
