Exotics Legal Team within The Legal Department has responsibility for a broad variety of work including (a) in-house developed proprietary indices across all asset classes, (b) structured and complex OTC derivatives and bespoke securitised products referencing all asset classes, and (c) full legal support to the businesses managing legal risk and advising the business on the rules and regulations relating to these products.

As a Exotics EDG (Equity Derivatives Group) and Indices Lawyer – Vice President you will have a great opportunity to further develop your skills and knowledge through working on a variety of different matters both within the Exotics Legal Team and the wider Practice Group. Whilst the role is primarily transactional, you are expected to have knowledge of UK and European derivatives law and regulation. This is a high profile and technically challenging role requiring a comprehensive understanding of the legal and commercial aspects of equity and other derivative transactions.

Job responsibilities

  • Advise the business (Trading, Structuring and Sales) on structuring complex derivative transactions, JP Morgan proprietary indices and bespoke structured products. This would include reviewing deal structures and documentation, identifying legal, regulatory, credit and other implementation issues relevant to a transaction, and providing general legal support and advice
  • Work closely with the business from inception to the close of transactions, including identifying legal and regulatory issues relevant to the transaction and the drafting and negotiating of transaction documentation.
  • Advise the business on a range of regulatory matters impacting the businesses supported by the Exotics Legal Team
  • Representing JP Morgan at industry bodies and events such as various ISDA working groups
  • Assisting and advising the business and colleagues in the Legal Department on regulatory change and implementation affecting the businesses we support
  • Driving process, documentation and efficiency improvements across the various areas of coverage

Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Experienced derivatives lawyer with good knowledge of transactional matters across multiple asset classes, derivatives law and regulation
  • Excellent negotiation skills and familiarity with the rules applicable to a wide-range of client types
  • Strong analytical and risk management skills as well as excellent drafting skills and a solution-oriented approach to their work
  • Strong collaboration skills to coordinate with colleagues around the world
  • Strong relationship with other control functions like compliance and an ability to spot and analyse reputational risks
  • Knowledgeable in securities law, derivatives rules and regulations and laws pertaining to funds as well as other applicable non-sectoral rules like US bank regulation and market abuse rules
  • Exceptional organisational and communication skills as well as attention to detail
  • Confident and proactive, enjoying working closely with Trading, Structuring and Sales on new product development
  • Team player and partners well with other stakeholder functions such as Compliance, Tax, Market Risk, Credit Risk
  • Licensed to practice law in England & Wales or a similar jurisdiction
