Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacentre Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacentre infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacentre construction and lease projects.
The BAS/EPMS team within DCE is responsible for establishing instrumentation infrastructure requirements and standards, delivering BAS design documents, EPMS documents and BAS implementation.This team develops and delivers efficiency and optimization programs, supporting 24x7x365 mission-critical CE instrumentation infrastructure within Microsoft’s global datacentres.

Responsibilities
Job Description:
Reporting to the Data Centre MEP Director, the Datacentre Design Controls Subject Matter Expert will manage, review, coordinate and provide key technical input during site due diligence, detailed design and construction administration phases of a datacentre project. Initially this position will primarily support network growth/upgrade refresh to align with Microsoft Corporation datacentre capacity roadmap for the EMEA region.
This position will collaborate and manage internal and external resources for the design, coordination and delivery of discipline-specific systems aligning with Microsoft and site-specific requirements.
Core Responsibilities:
As the Subject Matter Expert (SME), this individual provides key input to other organizations and stakeholders and is responsible for leading controls workgroups with representatives from AE firms and other key stakeholders within Microsoft. This position requires a detailed understanding of datacentre controls and operational experience.
The SME will be responsible for
- Leading and directing consultants in the design and coordination of the mechanical systems, associated controls, electrical systems and monitoring and overall network topology.
- Providing technical expertise and making design decisions related to data centre projects including new construction, expansions, retrofits and upgrades and standards upgrades globally.
- Critical assessments of designs, decisions and support in applying the required standards and country-specific regulations to make the best design choices.
- Engaging and managing external design consultants, running design workshops to ensure they deliver a design to meet the requirements of the Basis of Design (BOD).
- Collaboration with Global Technical Excellence team, Global Strategy team and DC Operations teams to develop datacentre designs from Basis of Design (BOD) to Issue For Construction (IFC) and through the Construction Administration phase of the datacentre until handover for new project build outs.
- Some travel to sites for “Factory Witness Testing”, consultant/vendor interaction in the design process, as well as for final commissioning of the installed systems. Duties include the technical review of controls design documents from lease providers to ensure Microsoft requirements are met.
- Supporting requests, liaise with customers to develop specific project design requirements, liaise and collaborate with other Microsoft engineering teams and Operations providing support as and when required for new and existing data centres.
- Specification and drawing development detailing the control diagrams, sequence of operation for the mechanical controls systems, electrical monitoring systems, overall network topology and communication protocols.
- Providing excellent communication, maintaining organization, and exhibiting strong leadership skills.
- Must be able to work with other technical and non-technical groups in a collaborative manner
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- HND or Time Served Controls Apprenticeship
- Extensive experience in construction / engineering / operation of hyperscale data centres or similar large scale and complex engineering systems (Pharmaceutical, Micro Electronics are two examples of relevant industries)
- In-depth knowledge of Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS), Branch Circuit Monitoring Systems (BCMS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), Building Automation Systems (BAS), and Building Management Systems (BMS).
- Technical understanding of mission critical environments.
- In-depth knowledge of open BAS protocols and communications - BACnet, LON, MODBUS, Ethernet, Web-Services, html, and others.
- Strong experience with the operation and maintenance of building cooling and related mechanical systems (HVAC, Chilled Water, DX Refrigerant, Evaporative, and related controls systems).
- In-depth knowledge of server platforms, virtualization theories and concepts, database design and engineering, data management and disaster recovery / planning / risk assessment.
- Knowledge of construction techniques and terminology including the ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings and documents is essential.
- Must possess strong leadership competencies and willingness to collaborate and work cross- functionally to maximize business results and positive customer experiences.
- Experience managing both internal and external vendors, with a proven ability to manage and monitor progress to ensure objectives are achieved for outsourced project efforts.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills at varying levels of business up to and including business executives.
- Ability to manage, prioritize and successfully execute multiple concurrent mission-critical infrastructure projects.
- Ability to lead teams of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large data centre environments.
- Extensive experience and ability to work on Design & Build (D&B) and Design Bid Build (DBB) projects
- Knowledge of construction techniques and terminology including the ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings and documents is essential.
- Excellent analytical and organisational skills.
- Excellent problem solving, judgement, team building and decision-making skills.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in related Engineering or equivalent technical experience
- Practical experience with building automation and electrical power monitoring systems
- Ability to present using the MS Office Suite; MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint.
Experience Required:
- Experience as lead BAS engineer, EPMS engineer, mechanical engineer, electrical engineer or design manager
