An exciting Assistant Electrical Engineer role has become available for an ambitious engineer to work for the Traction Power team undertaking railway traction power consultancy & design projects of various sizes, many of which are multi-disciplinary in nature.

The successful candidate will be highly organised, self-starting, and entrepreneurial, fully able to demonstrate very good time management and communication skills as well as the ability to work to deadlines. A curious mind and an appetite for learning are essential to thrive in our consultancy environment.

Dependent upon specific project requirements, there may be a requirement to travel to other locations (company or client, office, or site) within the UK and overseas for various periods of time.

You will be responsible for producing technical work packages on a wide range of Mott MacDonald projects under the supervision of Principal Engineers and alongside other Junior and Senior engineers. The work will be stimulating and varied covering all aspects of traction power systems for both AC and DC rail systems.The role will encompass a very broad range of traction power design elements and will enable the successful candidate to apply for Chartered Engineer (if qualification has not previously been achieved). The successful candidate will preferably hold an MSc in Power (or similar) and will have a few years of relevant experience working in an electrical engineering field and or the rail industry.

Some traction power experience would be advantageous, but not essential as training will be provided working on specific contracts under the supervision of more senior engineers on a daily basis.

The principal areas of work include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing solutions for specific Clients on projects
  • Use of CAD to produce 2D and 3D drawings, schematics, and diagrams
  • Use of TRAIN traction load-flow simulation package to model traction power supplies
  • Development of AC and DC traction power supply systems
  • Production of AC and DC traction substation designs
  • Production of earthing and bonding designs
  • Production of electrical protection schemes and relay settings
  • Production of specifications to support procurement of traction power equipment
  • Visits to railway sites on occasion
  • Building relations with existing and new Clients as part of our Business Development work
  • Involvement with bids and production of proposals to satisfy Client tender requirements
  • Production of polished consultancy reports
  • Contribution to ongoing development of tools and processes
  • Attendance in Client facing meetings from time to time
  • Contribution to team meetings and other team events
  • Depending on experience: Leading/coordinating the delivery of work packages mentioned above.

Engineering Support and Design Manager Roles depending on experience and career aspirations.

Candidate Specification :

Essential competencies / skills:

  • BSc. Hons. in Electrical Engineering or similar subject
  • Experience in electrical engineering
  • As per Job Description above but with working knowledge of:
    • Microsoft Office
    • Office365
    • SharePoint
Desirable academic, professional qualifications and experience:
  • MSc in Power (or similar)
  • Experience in traction power engineering within a railway 'design & build' or consultancy business
  • Experience in leading/coordinating the delivery of packages of work.
  • Experience in project / contract management
  • Achieved or working towards Chartership.
Desirable competencies / skills:
  • Experience working on a railway site (PTS, BTA…)
  • As per Job Description above but with working knowledge of:
    • ETAP (or equivalent electrical network modelling software)
    • MATLAB
    • Bentley Microstation or AutoCAD
    • Rail system performance modelling software.
