Our Bridges Team is involved in a number of significant projects working closely with colleagues delivering excellence for our clients. We are currently providing highway bridges & structures designs for several major highways' projects including the M42 Junction 6 Improvements, A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet, A46 Newark Bypass as well as designs for bridges on HS2.


We are looking for a well-motivated Bridges & Structures Lead at Technical Director level with a genuine passion for bridge engineering analysis and design, and a desire to make a difference in the world. In addition to providing technical excellence and leadership, you will support the HTS management team with securing new work, building and developing the team and diversifying its workload to provide team members with opportunities for growth and development.

This role will include managing a team of bridge engineers in support of our major and portfolio projects involving:

  • Championing a Safety By Design culture
  • Engagement externally with our Clients to promote the team's capabilities and secure new and interesting work
  • Recruiting, mentoring, leading and supporting new team members at all levels
  • Engaging with other Mott MacDonald offices to generate new work and support the diversification of the team's workload and opportunities for development
  • Line management of team members assisting with day-to-day management and career development
  • Engaging with the HTS resource management process to monitor and optimise the teams workload
  • Building client relationships, business development, bids and proposals
  • Supporting the role of Bridges & Civils Structures Practice lead developing technical excellence for the Division and wider Practice across Mott MacDonald
  • Undertaking the role of Bridge Discipline lead on major schemes
  • Overseeing advanced analysis for a wide variety of often complex scenarios
  • Undertaking options selection and preliminary designs of bridge structures
  • Leading the design or assessment of all types of bridge structures to develop cost-effective solutions
  • Identifying the need for and direct technical risk assessments
  • Providing Peer Assist and Peer Reviews to projects
As Technical Director, you will be familiar with working to industry codes and standards and are comfortable pushing boundaries using your experiences. You will have a thorough understanding of structural behaviours and are able to translate this knowledge into effective structural designs within bridge structures as well as mentor junior team members. You will have a detailed structural understanding and experience of analytical techniques.

Technical Director responsibilities :
  • Engineering design on new build and maintenance/upgrade projects
  • Leading and guiding the team throughout all phases of projects, from bidding to completion
  • Involved in a range of small to large projects which are industry and publicly high profile
  • Working and leading a growing team carrying out bridge feasibility works, design, assessment and strengthening depending upon project requirements
  • Responsible for all aspects of assigned project work and the supervision of team members
  • Working on a range highway bridge commissions ranging from assessment work to feasibility studies, designs and potentially refurbishment and replacement schemes
  • Developing the asset management capability of the team;
  • Day-to-day management of the team, including resource / workload management for its members
  • Business development activities such as internal engagement within Mott MacDonald and supporting external bidding activities to secure new work
Candidate Specification :The successful candidate will be proactive and enthusiastic to play a significant contribution to growing team with:
  • Demonstrable experience managing a technical team, with extensive experience of winning work and engaging with Clients, internally and externally
  • Delivery of Design and Build projects and significant experience working with Contractors
  • A strong personal interest in bridge engineering which will be utilised in a broad range of highway engineering projects
  • Strong technical focus and IT skills using a digital modelling approach to delivery by default
  • Methodical approach to problem solving including sustainability and decarbonisation
  • Ability to use your initiative and extensive experience to undertake and supervise tasks efficiently
  • Excellent written communication and attention to detail and be able to produce accurate technical deliverables
  • Excellent verbal communication and engagement skills and a keen interest in growing your team and diversifying their workload to develop their skills and experience
  • Capability to work to deadlines and work autonomously when required
  • Ability to mentor and supervise team members
  • MEng, MSc or similar degree
  • Chartered with a UK professional institution or equivalent (ICE/IStructE, etc.)
  • A detailed understanding of DMRB and PCF Products relating to National Highways schemes

Desirable competencies / skills:

  • A desire to drive your own career and development including relevant CPD and professional qualifications
  • Aspirations to achieve Fellowship of either ICE or IStructE
