Nyrstar Hobart is a large scale zinc smelter located on Hobart's River Derwent, only a few kilometres from the Tasmanian capital's charming and cosmopolitan city centre.
The facility uses the RLE process for zinc production. Hobart's key products are SHG zinc, die cast alloys and continuous galvanising grad (CGG) alloys. In addition, the site produces by-products of cadmium, copper sulphate, paragoethite, lead sulphate, leach concentrate and sulphuric acid.
This is a rare opportunity to work on site in the resources industry, in a capital city location.

THE ROLE
As a key role in the Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) Team, reporting to the Health and Safety Superintendent, you will provide a key support function to line management and employees in health and hygiene issues which will assist in the prevention of accidents, incidents and events that harm people, property, or the environment.
You will be responsible for:
- Ensuring that health and hygiene policies and standards are known, understood, and practised across the site through the development and implementation of effective education/training programs.
- Providing technical support to define action plans to reduce or eliminate unacceptable exposures, follow plans and help departments to correct deviations.
- Keep abreast of legislative change to ensuring that all statutory obligations are observed in relation to safety and health at the site.
- Completing, maintaining, and coordinating the Qualitative & Quantitative Industrial Hygiene Risk Assessment to ensure compliance with the Nyrstar Standards for exposure and biological monitoring.
- Contributing to broader initiatives of the SHEQ team including the development and implementation of safety initiatives.
YOU
We'd love to chat if you have:
- Tertiary Qualifications in Occupational Hygiene (completed or to be completed in 12 months' time) or if not then a similar, suitable tertiary qualification and experience
- Thorough knowledge of sampling and analytical methods and instrumentation including calculation of exposure levels and statistics.
- Ability to convey new ideas and technical information in a manner which is easily understood by people from a range of cultural and educational backgrounds; and
- Demonstrated ability to engage with workers and form effective working relationships with line leaders.
- High-level written communication skills including creating of reports, discussion papers and general correspondence.
