The role
SSEN Transmission has a unique opportunity to join a development programme to re-train to become a Power System Engineer. The candidates will join a fast-track 10-week specialist training module to learn how to undertake power system studies to support the integration of low carbon generation and related technologies onto the transmission system in the north of Scotland. Followed by three placement rotations across the planning and operational teams.
Our 24-month development programme, through work-based and academic training, is designed to support your understanding of technical requirements to develop into a Power System Engineer. Providing advanced simulation capability, from steady state power system analysis using PowerFactory through to cutting edge large scale Electro-Magnetic Transient (EMT) modelling using Power Systems Computer Aided Design (PSCAD) software on dedicated high-performance computing hardware.
You will:
- Under direction, develop skills to carry out system studies, technical assessments, planning and development of the Transmission network.
- Learn how to assess network performance, network capability, and identify options to maintain or enhance these.
- Support the System Performance and System Engineering & Investment teams, along with the Transmission Control Centre in making engineering recommendations for network improvements to meet the current and future requirements of SSEN Transmission; and gain confidence to make those recommendations as part of your role.
- Understand and develop skills to carry out a wide range of simulations and studies including power flow analysis, fault level studies, voltage and thermal capability, transient stability, fast switching studies, harmonic and power quality analysis to ensure licence and Grid Code obligations are met.
- Gain skills to ensure that the SSEN Transmission system is modelled accurately along with key interfaces and that the required data for detailed steady state and dynamic analysis of the transmission network is controlled.
You have:
- For this programme, you'll ideally have an MEng or minimum of a 2:2 BEng in an engineering, mathematics or science-based discipline.
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills, including problem solving, fault investigation, data analysis and interpretation of simulation results.
- An ability to manage and prioritise tasks ranging from technical problems to the portfolio of projects in the early stages of design/development.
- Enthusiasm to integrate with, and provide positive contribution to, a team of specialist engineering professionals; with the drive and potential to develop into a Power System Engineer
- Excellent communication, time-management, and organisational skills.
- Ideally have a basic understanding of power system fundamentals and network analysis, including generation, transmission, distribution, transformers, three-phase systems, load flow, fault level and power quality studies.
- Ideally have previous work experience in a professional setting, such as completed a graduate programme.
About SSE
SSE’s purpose is to be restless every day until we make electricity clean, affordable and available for all.
We do this by developing, building, operating and investing in electricity infrastructure and businesses needed in the energy transition. This includes electricity transmission and distribution networks, onshore and offshore wind farms, hydro-electric power and flexible thermal generation. We also provide products and services for businesses and other customers.
Our investment plan will see SSE invest £33bn in critical electricity infrastructure to 2030.
SSEN Transmission own and operate the electricity transmission network across the north of Scotland. We transport electricity from where it is generated to where it is needed, ensuring a safe and reliable electricity supply for the communities we serve. But that's not all – we're upgrading the grid to deliver cleaner, homegrown power for the future and building the infrastructure needed for a cleaner electricity system to create secure power for generations to come.
