The role

We're looking for a Senior Investment Manager to join SSE Thermal Development and play a key role in shaping investment decisions for some of the UK's most significant flexible and low-carbon energy projects. This is an opportunity to lead investment analysis and business case development across a portfolio of complex development projects where commercial structures, policy frameworks, costs and routes to market continue to evolve and high-quality analysis is central to making sound investment decisions.

You'll combine strong financial and commercial insight with people leadership, acting as a trusted adviser to project teams and senior leaders, translating complex analysis into clear recommendations while developing a high-performing team of analysts.

You will

  • Lead discounted cashflow modelling, investment appraisal and business case development for major energy and infrastructure projects, supporting decisions from early-stage opportunities through to final investment approval.
  • Lead the critical evaluation of project assumptions, value drivers, risks and uncertainties, using financial analysis, scenarios and sensitivities to turn complex information into clear investment recommendations.
  • Lead, coach and develop a team of analysts, setting clear objectives, supporting their career development and creating an inclusive environment where people can grow their skills and deliver their best work.
  • Build trusted relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, influencing and challenging constructively to improve project outcomes and investment decisions.
  • Establish and continuously improve analytical standards and ways of working, including model review, assumption management, data governance and consistent, transparent analytical outputs.
  • Develop and strengthen the team's project finance capability, working with Corporate Finance and external advisers on financing structures and project-financed developments.

You have

  • Significant experience in discounted cashflow (DCF) modelling, investment appraisal and valuation of large-scale capital projects, ideally within energy, infrastructure, utilities or similarly complex sectors.
  • Strong commercial judgment and the ability to understand and challenge the market, regulatory, technical and commercial assumptions underpinning a financial model.
  • The ability to translate complex financial and commercial information into clear, evidence-based recommendations for senior decision-makers.
  • Experience developing robust business cases and supporting projects through investment decision-making and governance processes.
  • A track record of leading, coaching and developing others, with a passion for building capability and supporting team success.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to challenge assumptions, influence decisions and build trusted relationships across multiple disciplines.
  • Experience of project finance, infrastructure finance or debt-funded projects would be advantageous; alternatively, you'll bring strong investment analysis experience and an interest in developing this capability.

About SSE

SSE’s purpose is to be restless every day until we make electricity clean, affordable and available for all.

We do this by developing, building, operating and investing in electricity infrastructure and businesses needed in the energy transition. This includes electricity transmission and distribution networks, onshore and offshore wind farms, hydro-electric power and flexible thermal generation. We also provide products and services for businesses and other customers.

Our investment plan will see SSE invest £33bn in critical electricity infrastructure to 2030.

SSE Thermal help keep electricity available for millions of people while pioneering low-carbon technologies. From ground-breaking carbon capture and storage projects to plans for what might be the world's first hydrogen-fired power station, we're transforming how flexible power supports a cleaner electricity system.
