Salary: £95,000 - £121,100 / €120,000 - €160,100 + car/car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time | Flexible First options available

The role

As Bid Director, you’ll take end-to-end leadership of some of SSE Renewables’ most significant and complex bidding opportunities, from major Contracts for Difference (CfD) and seabed leasing competitions through to multi-factor bids across our UK, Irish and international markets.

With individual project investment values ranging from around £50m to £4bn, you’ll bring together commercial, technical, financial and development expertise to define winning strategies, make clear choices and create compelling propositions in highly competitive markets.

Reporting to the Director of Bids within our Commercial team, you’ll lead bid teams of around 10–20+ people, working across SSE and, where applicable, with Joint Venture partners. You’ll create the environment for people to challenge thinking, innovate and maintain a clear focus on commercial value and successful outcomes.

This is a highly visible role with the opportunity to directly influence the future SSE Renewables pipeline and the investments that will support our growth over the years ahead.

You will

  • Own the outcome: Lead major bids from initial strategy through governance, submission and handover, establishing clear priorities, accountabilities and a winning commercial approach.
  • Develop winning strategies: Define bid strategy, win themes and value propositions, using market, competitor and customer insight to create compelling and differentiated propositions.
  • Drive commercial value: Challenge and understand the key economics behind each opportunity, including Devex, Capex, Opex, funding, revenue, power market and offtake assumptions, identifying opportunities to strengthen value and competitiveness.
  • Lead through influence: Bring together multi-disciplinary teams across development, finance, procurement, technical, grid, energy economics and commercial functions, alongside JV partners, advisers, funders and supply chain partners to deliver successful bids.
  • Provide confident governance: Develop robust governance and assurance plans and present clear recommendations, strategic choices, risks and commercial decisions to senior SSE leadership and JV Boards or Steering Committees.

You have

  • Significant experience leading complex, large-scale, multidisciplinary renewable energy bids or projects, ideally in project-financed or Joint Venture environments, with a strong understanding of commercial and contractual structures and experience navigating JV arrangements, contract negotiations and complex stakeholder environments.
  • Strong commercial acumen, with experience understanding and challenging the value drivers, risks and sensitivities within major investment business cases.
  • A good understanding of how CFD and Renewable Energy Support Scheme (RESS) contracts are awarded and how they function.
  • A demonstrable track record of developing bid strategies, win themes and value propositions and bringing diverse teams together around a clear strategy and outcome. The credibility and communication skills to influence at senior level, build consensus, challenge constructively and present clear recommendations internally and externally.

You’ll also be comfortable operating where there isn’t always a straightforward answer. You’ll be curious, commercially minded and willing to challenge established thinking when there’s an opportunity to achieve a better outcome.
