About the Role
Base Location: Flexible, however our preference is that you will be based in one of our key UK or Ireland sites, which includes but is not limited to:- Glasgow, Perth, Aberdeen, Inverness, Reading, Havant, Belfast or Dublin.
Salary: £74,600 - £112,000 + car / car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

Enabling a Net Zero Future | SSE Thermal are looking for a Head of Procurement and Commercial to act as a business partner to develop and implement procurement and commercial strategies that support business objectives and optimise returns whilst protecting the business from commercial risk. Managing, focusing and motivating the commercial and procurement teams. Ensuring the successful commercial delivery of projects and compliance with procedures.
The Head of Procurement & Commercial will liaise with both the Thermal Procurement & Commercial Team and Group Procurement Operations Team on a regular basis to review and analyse business plans and objectives, demand forecasts, supplier performance and progress and performance of the wider procurement & commercial team.
They will continuously work to strategically improve procedures, standards or policies whilst adhering to regulatory guidelines. They will demonstrate value creation against the core purpose of the department: value leadership, customer service and innovation.
- Lead direct staff in the procurement and commercial team dedicated to the business unit and the wider procurement and commercial team establishing a culture of people development, providing direction and clarity of objectives. Direct, motivate and co-coordinate the entire team to ensure the necessary expertise and support are in place to deliver the vision, objectives and goals.
- Support the Director of Procurement in providing 'best in class' service to internal customers including procurement, contracting, supply chain, commercial and contractual input to development, construction and operational teams within the Business Unit.
- Implementation of quality standards in contracts. Proactively identifies trends that may lead to quality issues and develops strategies to prevent them occurring.
- Ensure the development and execution of procurement and commercial strategies which are aligned with category plans, company and business objectives. This includes identifying and implementing supply chain improvement opportunities to support business growth.
- Understand and support the development of strategic relationships with key suppliers and effectively manage key interfaces with points of contact in a business unit and with the wider procurement and commercial team.
- Manage a team responsible for delivery of all contracts, within approved budget authorisations. This includes the administration and compliance with contract terms during design, delivery and construction phases for all projects.
- Manage all pre contract cost estimates to support project business cases.
- Manage all post contract commercial matters including negotiating/agreeing compensation events and ensure that the core principles of the Commercial Manual are being implemented. Resolve and co-ordinate resolution for all contractual claims that have required escalation from P&C Managers/Project Teams.
- Build and manage business plans and related budgets for own portfolio of responsibility and support the development of bids / business growth where appropriate.
- Providing Board Reports and related KPI information ensuring full compliance with agreed procedures.
- Assist, deputise and support the Director of Procurement.
What do I need?
To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:
- Understands the financial aspects and implications of operational requirements and complex capital projects.
- Fully understands the commercial impact of decisions and the implications on procurement process.
- Claims preparation and management experience.
- Detailed knowledge and experience of complex contract structure and documentation.
- Thorough understanding, knowledge and experience of the processes relating to procurement strategy.
- Advanced experience of supplier development techniques and managing the development of complex supplier relationships.
