What is the Role?
The Real-Time Systems Delivery (RTSD) Team is responsible for the project delivery, design, installation, testing and commissioning of Industrial Control Systems, Operational Communications and SCADA field systems that SSEN use to operate our primary and secondary assets across multiple locations across the Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution (SHEPD) licensed area.
As a Design Engineer in the team, you will play a pivotal role in taking business and customer requests for operational communication and SCADA systems. You will also work closely with them to design and implement solutions that meet the purpose and vison set out in the overall ED2 project portfolio.
You will work closely as a key stakeholder with SSEN Project Managers, OT standards Engineers and other SSEN technical teams to ensure the successful delivery of projects on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
Your key responsibilities will be as follows.
- Design and Deliver Operational Communication and SCADA field systems that monitor and control SSEN's primary and secondary assets.
- Conduct factory acceptance testing (FAT) and site acceptance testing (SAT) for Operational Communication and SCADA field systems.
- As a key stakeholder in ED2 projects, collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Suppliers, Contractors, Engineers, and Technicians, to ensure the delivery of the best solution to meet strategic needs and operational efficiency.
- Provide Subject Matter Expert (SME) technical support to the broader business and key stakeholders during the installation and operation of all field systems.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to team members.
- Keep up to date with emerging technologies and industry trends involving Operational Communications and SCADA systems and make recommendations for their adoption where it fits business needs and customer requirements.
To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:
- Degree level in Electrical and Electronics Engineering or another relevant discipline, CEng chartered status or a clear path towards CEng chartered status is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of Industrial Control Systems, PLCs, and RTUs is essential.
- Strong knowledge of IEC61850 and other utility protocols and operational communication methods is essential.
- Project Management qualifications such as APM PMQ, Prince 2, or proven experience in project management in the utility sector would be advantageous.
- Proficient in utilising a range of Microsoft technologies, including Microsoft 365, Azure, and PowerBI.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate in a team environment and with other cross-functional teams.
- The role requires some travel to substations, sites and other SSE offices, so a full driving license is essential.
