About the role
Base Location: Perth, Glasgow or Reading
Salary: £55,573 - £63,643 + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

The Operational Technology (OT) team within Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks, design, build and support the industrial control, communication and monitoring systems that are used to operate and manage the primary assets within the electricity network.
At SSEN, data network planning encompasses all aspects of the operational data network and we have an exciting opportunity for a Data Network Planner to join our team.
This specific role focuses on our telecommunications network and the strategy to ensure all our sites are fully connected and operational. You will have the opportunity to be involved in civils and duct work through microwave radios, transmission platforms (e.g. SDH) and on to the data network that we use to control the electrical system.
Key responsibilities for the role will include:
- Creation of and input to technical strategy, longer term target architectures and ensuring SSEN have documented standards for all the data network.
- Owning a significant portfolio of services of data network technologies where you will become the subject matter expert along with creating target architectures.
- Developing and producing plans and designs for future projects and initiatives across the business, acting as a subject matter expert for any enquiries received regarding our data network.
- Continually keep an eye on the telecommunications and industrial controls market, ensuring we are utilising the tools available to us and exploring new and innovative ways to improve our networks.
- Contributing and supporting our technology training plans to support our goal of continual improvement although training within our team is something we all contribute towards.
What do I need?
To be considered for this role we would love you to have:
- Excellent knowledge or experience in the design and operation of communications networks, ideally within a regulated environment such as ours. Key technologies would include MPLS, OSPF, BGP and a deep understanding of building scalable & secure networks using the above technologies.
- Keen understanding or keen interest to learn about almost all aspects of telecommunications infrastructure such as data networking, fibre optic cabling, microwave radio and ancillary site equipment.
- Experience of migrating networks from older technologies to newer IP-based technologies would be a distinct advantage as would a low level understanding of practically enhancing the cyber security of network infrastructure.
- Strong experience in data networking over multiple vendors & platforms with a track record of learning new technologies and producing target architectures - an ability to train others in data network is desirable.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to liaise with stakeholders at all levels and be able to convey complex messages in an easy to understand manner as well as excellent problem solving skills and organisation skills with a keen eye for detail.
