As part of the SSEN Transmission Pathway to 2030 programme of works, we have a number of Cable Project Engineering opportunities to support its delivery, including Senior Engineer, Project Engineer and Assistant Project Engineer levels.
The roles advertised would sit within SSEN Transmissions Project Engineering Team with a primary focus on AC land cable systems and although specific experience with Transmission networks would be desirable, it is not necessary. We encourage candidates with a project engineering background, ideally with a HV cable engineering background in either contractor, consultancy, or client organisations within the Energy Industry to apply. In addition to experience with land cable systems, candidates with subsea cable design or installation experience will be looked upon favourably. For Assistant Cable Project engineer positions, we will consider candidates from other industries, with good transferable skills and willingness to learn for the role.
The key responsibilities will be:
- involved in the full project life cycle, from project definition, preparing and evaluating tenders, conceptual and front-end design development, detail design reviews, HAZID/HAZCON/HAZOP sessions into supporting construction, installation, commissioning, and project completion.
- providing cable engineering support across multiple projects by producing or reviewing outline cable system designs during development phases, including: review and assessment of technology options, underground cable routing selection, producing current rating calculations using CYMCAP software and assessment of interface requirements.
- Developing technical scopes and specifications for new underground cable projects as well as modifications to existing assets.
- Reviewing cable system prequalification and type testing reports in preparation for SSEN approval, reviewing and verifying contractor/consultant detailed underground cable system designs, witnessing factory and relevant discipline site acceptance testing.
- Providing technical support to site teams to ensure quality of installations and cable commissioning activities.
- Evaluate tenders and procure and manage specialist services from consultants.
- promoting and managing safety within your assigned projects through the implementation of CDM procedures and practices, ensuring the project engineering is compliant with company, HSE and industry regulations.
- responsible for cable engineering delivery on your assigned projects or across your region, for your specific discipline, of a typical capital value of £50m - £200m
-working closely with Engineering Managers and Project Managers to ensure that Engineering and Quality risks are identified and mitigated.
- providing technical support on high profile projects or technically complex issues.
What do I need?
To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:
- Demonstrable technical skills in Transmission voltage level underground cable systems development, design and specification or demonstrable transferable skills and experience.
- Self-Starter attitude, who enjoys problem solving and have an ability to communicate complex technical issues in a clear and concise manner to facilitate decision making by senior management.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to demonstrate diligence and to prioritise workload.
- An understanding of the legislation and implications of such for the management of the Transmission network for both Assets and Projects, including CDM & ESQCR.
- Preferably hold or, with past work experience be working towards a degree or masters in an appropriate engineering discipline depending on the level of position applied for.
- An appreciation of multi-discipline projects, and design interface management would be desirable.
