We are entering an era of unprecedented potential to deliver scientific breakthroughs within asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and chronic cough.
Our research ambition for the future is to transform the lives of these patients through our growing portfolio of inhaled combinations at the core of care, biologics for the unmet needs of specific patient populations, and scientific advancements in disease modification with the ambition of achieving remission or even cures for patients.
As VP and Head of Clinical Respiratory, you are a key member of the Late R&I Leadership Team and play an integral role in fuelling the alignment and strategy across the function. By multi-disciplined collaborations, you will develop a high performing Late Stage R&I function. Additionally, you will collaborate with Early R&I and external partners to drive the Respiratory Therapeutic Area strategy.
You can be based in one of our dynamic R&D Hubs in Gothenburg, Gaithersburg or Cambridge.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
You will be responsible for leading all aspects of the efficiency of the organization as well as Physician’s processes, including driving simplification and efficiency. In collaboration with science and commercial units, you will set clear priorities tied to the product pipelines.
- Provide strategic leadership on key cross-cutting enabling strategy for AstraZeneca's innovative Respiratory portfolio, including but not limited to novel endpoints, patient phenotyping, device strategy, disease understanding
- Lead business development strategy in partnership with Global Business Development group
- Develop an effective high performing Late Stage Respiratory function, working effectively within the wider R&I R&D organisation and across functional areas, to deliver on the business priorities with desirable speed, quality and time. This includes effective internal and external stakeholders’ management to ensure goal alignment and efficient execution of priorities.
- Direct the tactical development and implementation of the company’s strategic Physician Management plan to achieve desired results.
- Lead all aspects of the overall efficiency of the organization, including driving simplification. Set clear priorities tied to the product pipelines, working in close collaboration with other science and commercial units as required.
- Coordinate and steer the Physician’s processes and standards to ensure their appropriateness and guarantee compliance to all internal and external processes. Ensures any issues are reviewed in a timely manner. Set up appropriate risk controls as appropriate.
- Develop and ensure the organization has the right capabilities, skills, engagement and motivation to play to win, both short and long term by acting as role model of AstraZeneca’s values
- Lead and encourage the Physician team to ensure department goals and targets are achieved and the performance of individuals is run effectively
- Deputize for Senior VP Late R&I at core governance meetings
Essential Requirements
You are a recognized Scientific Leader within Respiratory TA, with both clinical development and medical expertise. In previous roles, you have shown scientific opinion leadership and possess detailed as well as general understanding of the pharmaceutical industry. Your ability to convert insights of future trends in respiratory science and drug development into ambitious advantage and results.
You are also equipped with:
- Degree in Medicine, ideally complemented with training and specialization in Respiratory Medicine and related Professional Qualification, with a minimum of 20 years of relevant experience
- Academic credentials in Respiratory and an authority and inspiring leader in academia or industry.
- A deep and broad understanding of the global pharmaceutical industry and of the key value building processes within the industry.
- Demonstrated Scientific Leadership within the therapeutic area, with both clinical development and medical expertise.
- Demonstrated strong understanding of future trends in scientific and drug development, business development, portfolio planning, analytics, compliance, regulatory and commercial aspects within the therapeutic area into competitive advantage and results.
- Broad ability to influence strategically across internal and external stakeholder groups in a complex environment
- Extensive clinical trials and drug development experience in Respiratory, with a focus on late stage development
- Strong leadership qualities and experience in building high performing organizations and teams
- An established external network including effective relationship with scientific authorities, medical and scientific organizations, governmental bodies and patient organizations within the therapeutic area
- Global and enterprise mind-set, able to lead and engage across multiple, complex organizations and geographies.
- Track record of delivering overall results with quality and cost across the therapeutic area by driving strategic, financial and people performance.
