Job Summary

Prepares investment tax accounting for federal, state, and local income tax returns; collects, organizes, analyzes, and evaluates financial data and other related information necessary for the accurate preparation of tax returns; prepares returns in accordance with established policies and procedures; ensures returns are filed by required deadlines.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Researches investment tax technical issues, interprets and applies laws, regulations, and municipal ordinances; acts in an advisory capacity working with division management and/or designated representatives providing guidance and direction on and clarifying the interpretation of the investment tax accounting procedures, policies, and practices of the company and applicable regulatory authorities

  • Collects, organizes, analyzes, and evaluates investment tax financial data and other related information; completes quantitative and qualitative reviews, and prepares required internal and external investment tax records, reports, statistics, financial statements, analysis, stockholder reports, etc.; develops and presents conclusions to management

  • Identifies and resolves investment tax accounting and financial transaction discrepancies; ensures necessary general ledger account corrections are completed; maintains complete and accurate regulatory filings; assists with developing, analyzing, and implementing investment tax accounting procedures in a systems environment in conformance with GAAP, SSAP, federal, state, and local regulatory standards

  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with business partners and with federal, state and municipal agencies; stays abreast of current investment tax trends and regulatory investment tax changes in the industry; assists senior team members in developing and implementing new applications and analytical models or enhancing existing systems

  • Performs other duties as required

Education & Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance, or related field
  • CPA eligible
  • Zero to two years of corporate-level tax accounting experience in an organization of comparable size
  • Insurance industry accounting experience

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Job Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) codes and regulations, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Statutory Accounting Principles (SSAP), municipal ordinances, state insurance department statutes, and other state regulations, with an emphasis on tax accounting

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting and financial systems user applications (SAP preferred), including input/output processing and complex system concepts

  • Experience and proficient in Microsoft Office with intermediate Excel skills

  • Ability to understand and use computer systems and application tools for analysis

  • Ability to perform financial analysis and related valuation methodologies, systems, and quantitative business-based analysis, metrics, and experimental designs
