The Cloud Hardware Infrastructure Engineering (CHIE) Team is seeking a Thermal/Mechanical Engineer to conduct end to end development of complex server and infrastructure designs. The candidate will support both in-house and ODM/OEM designs at all levels from component, card, to full systems that require air and liquid cooling. The Engineer will create and deliver thermal designs using first order calculations and CFD modeling, direct partners, support testing, develop thermal control systems, and solve complex technical problems for Microsoft’s future server products.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for thermal design of computer servers and racks using both first order calculations and CFD software.
  • Responsible for directing the thermal design efforts of partners and contract manufacturers.
  • End-to-end Ownership of designs from early architectural specification to post-production sustaining. 
  • Responsible for interfacing with multi-discipline teams in development of server hardware.
  • Presentation of information to partner teams and management.
  • Responsible for planning and carrying out testing on thermal components and systems.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (or related).
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience in the electronics design industry with a track record of production thermal designs.
  • 3+ years of experience with CFD packages such as Flotherm, Icepak, FloEFD.

Preferred:

  • Proficient with CFD packages such as Flotherm, Icepak, FloEFD.
  • Experience with prototyping and high volume manufacturing of thermal components.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Proficient at PTC Creo or other CAD tools.
  • Experience in liquid cooling and mixed cooling designs.
  • Experience with 2-phase liquid cooling and/or immersion cooling.
