Are you interested in working on a cutting-edge business that understands and values your work and sees user experience, customer experience, and service design as key strategic priorities? Join us as a product designer on Power BI, the next generation business intelligence with AI in the cloud. Power BI is one of the fastest growing SaaS services at Microsoft and we empower millions of business users in organizations around the planet to achieve more with their data. Our goal is to quickly transform business intelligence with low-code/no-code solutions. We help people analyze terabytes in seconds, extract business insights with AI, and consume those insights through rich visualization to enable millions of people around the world to realize their potential.
In this role (ideal for a junior designer), you’ll work with senior designers to take on parts of larger projects, helping with ad hoc design asks that don’t align with our sprint cycle, helping with larger initiatives like library organization, component creation, pattern alignment and more. You’ll design experiences that delight Power BI users and aim to reduce the time needed to get valuable insights from their data. The role’s broad scope will give you ample room to apply your design thinking—both on projects that have immediate impact on the business as well as explorations that shape our long-term strategy, vision and UX direction. This role will give a junior designer the perfect foundation needed to eventually level-up to own their own end-to-end work.
Our agile environment will be a good fit for you if you are:
- Thoughtful—You’re thoughtful and deliberate in your choices and able to articulate your thinking on the fly across a cross-functional team, and occasionally, conflicting priorities and objectives.
- Persuasive—You’ve got the social intelligence and sales skills to understand (or explain) what needs to be changed, and why. You use criticism to spur insightful conversations, not a reason to be defensive or shut down.
- A translator of tradeoffs—There’s no perfect interface and no right answer. You’re able to create different options and translate the tradeoffs between them in the context of business objectives.
- A facilitator—You know how to collaborate with others and let them bring their ideas and concerns on the table.
About the team
Your new UX group is part of one of the larger Design Studios at Microsoft which is reshaping the digital experiences for modern cloud-based data solutions and services. The team is comprised of widely talented and diverse individuals with interesting backgrounds and sometimes perplexing passions. It’s an environment where creativity and innovation thrive, and where you can be a part of the digital transformation of business intelligence. From our perspective—this is the moment to join, we are ready to grow, positioned to win and will be the next big design team that others wish they were part of.
Portfolio
A strong portfolio is critical for this role, both in terms of demonstrating your experience and as an example of your ability to create a compelling design presentation. Showcase your experience in UX and interaction design, particularly where simplicity and ease of use were a major concern. We’d like to see a diversity of projects but be careful that your portfolio doesn't get scattered or overly long—focus on curation and quality to choose a solid collection of outcomes and design intermediaries and deliverables (especially flows, mockups, prototypes, and demonstrations of your Figma component creation prowess), and be sure the portfolio demonstrates the design and thought process behind each image.
Responsibilities
As a designer on the Power BI team, you will:
- Generate UX design assets that illustrate feature vision, customer-value, establish design principles and visualizes new experiences
- As a feature owner, quickly produce elegant and easily understood user flows, wireframes, user interface layouts and prototypes
- Develop insights based on customer research, cultural trends and turn them into clear feature briefs and inspiring designs
- Validate designs using a variety of customer driven methods, communicate research findings and design rationale both verbally and visually
- Partner closely with other designers, researchers, PMs, data scientists and engineers to iteratively produce designs as part of a feature crew
- Provide continuing design support to engineering crews during software development, to ensure a high-quality user experience
- Contribute to design team efforts such as organizing and running idea sessions, producing mood-boards and vision videos, storyboarding, brainstorming, building user scenarios and developing concept sketches
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Design (or related field) or equivalent professional experience
- 1+ years’ industry experience in software/product interaction design (as opposed to visual, web, or graphic design) including design system and library maintenance.
- Expertise in Figma base component and variant creation.
- Demonstrated breadth across systems thinking, information architecture, usability, interaction design and visual design.
- The ability to quickly turn around rigorous wireframes and mockups quickly in a fast-paced, iterative environment and proven ability to work with data from customers.
- A strong interest in technology and know-how to work alongside engineers and product managers, and an ability to tell compelling stories about users and products to support your work.
- The ability to scope and estimate efforts accurately, prioritize tasks and goals independently.
