GEMCO (Groote Eylandt Mining Company) is one of the largest, lowest cost manganese ore producers in the world.
Groote Eylandt is one of the few remaining places in Northern Australia that is cane toad free and remains a strong hold for endangered native wildlife. About the role
The RMSL (Rehabilitation, Mine Services and Legacy) Mine Site Rehabilitation Crew Mentor works together with a team of Indigenous Groote Eylandt traditional owners. Together we help unlock each other’s fullest potential (both in and out of work). This position is critical to delivering the RMSL purpose statement of “together with the Anindilyakwa people we exchange knowledge, skills, understanding and confidence to live and work now and beyond GEMCO.”
The Mentor position is offered on a 5 on 2 off, 4 on x 3 off (9-day fortnight), 9.5 hour dayshift family friendly residential roster.
Key duties include:
- Assist the supervisor and mine site rehabilitation teams to help plan, scope and safely execute a range of activities including (but not limited to) native seed collection, nursery propagation, tree planting, weed management, grounds maintenance, arboriculture, rehabilitation trials and other core tasks to industry best practice standards.
- Leading by example ensuring that yourself and all team members follow the GEMCO life-saving rules and mine safety standards.
- Motivate and coach the team to overcome a range of challenges and be a positive role model both inside and out of work.
- Demonstrate a strong desire to make a positive contribution to the local Indigenous community through two-way learning and skill sharing.
- Help train the team to meet or exceed GEMCO standards in an environment of continuous improvement and competing seasonal priorities.
- Exchange knowledge and encourage two-way learning by sharing mainstream industry work practices whilst learning aspects of local indigenous culture.
About You
- Demonstrated experience and qualifications working, training or supervising within Mine Site Rehabilitation, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Sciences, Horticulture, Arboriculture, Indigenous Employment/training or other similar industries.
- Demonstrated experience working together with Indigenous trainees will be an advantage.
- Develop and maintain a high level of cultural awareness and mutual respect to effectively build working relationships with local indigenous employees and the broader local community.
- The successful candidate will display a passion for the environment, be a strong team player who is driven to continuously improve the mine sites rehabilitation program whilst delivering the RMSL purpose statement.
