In this role, you will form part of American Express’ global government affairs and policy function with the primary focus on our proprietary markets in Australia and New Zealand, and our network services markets in Asia. The role is preferably based in Sydney and reports to the Director of Government Affairs, APAC. You will be responsible, in collaboration with the broader APAC government affairs function, in driving American Express’ policy and advocacy work on a broad range of payment policy and regulatory issues.
Key responsibilities:

Monitor and analyse policy and regulatory developments of importance to American Express and provide advice to the business on implications. Key focus areas for this role are instant payments, digital currencies, open banking, data, pricing regulation, network rules and access.

Drive the creation of public policy responses on key focus areas in collaboration with the legal, compliance and business teams.

Draft position papers, submissions, talking points and other materials for internal and external communication.

Develop and execute public policy advocacy strategies.

Build relationships with key government officials, regulators and other third parties that influence the policymaking process in the key focus areas.

Represent American Express with relevant trade and industry bodies and host events to support efforts to protect and defend the Company’s interests in the relevant markets and focus areas.

Assist to promote American Express initiatives, products and services with key external stakeholders.

Work in close collaboration with legal and compliance partners to advise the business on policy and regulatory implications of new partnerships, products and services.
What we are looking for:

A highly effective written and verbal communicator with proven ability to draft clear policy positions in response to complex issues.

Work experience in government or in the private sector or an industry body working in a government/regulatory relations or advocacy function.

University qualification in politics, international relations, public policy, law, economics or other relevant field.

Experience working with government, industry partners and a broad set of internal stakeholders.

Ability to quickly understand complex policy and regulatory issues and communicate those effectively to a diverse audience.

Proven ability to develop public policy positions and advocacy strategies.
