How will you make an impact in this role?
The American Express Corporate Affairs & Communications (CA&C) team is a strategic function that works to promote and protect the American Express brand through public relations; corporate sustainability; communications and colleague engagement efforts.
The Manager, Corporate Sustainability – APAC, based in Sydney, Australia, will support American Express’ global sustainability strategy, including the implementation of its sustainability reporting framework and broader corporate sustainability priorities, with a focus on regulatory reporting and related initiatives across APAC. This role will act as a regional sustainability lead, providing strategic guidance and subject matter expertise to support local teams in meeting sustainability and climate regulatory reporting requirements across Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and other relevant jurisdictions.
The Manager of Corporate Sustainability – APAC will report to the Director of Corporate Sustainability in New York and sit within the enterprise Corporate Sustainability Team. This role requires extensive collaboration with local, regional, and global business units including Controllership and Finance, Risk, the General Counsel’s Organization, and market-based teams to drive decision-making and alignment.
This role also includes targeted support for regional colleague engagement activities, including nonprofit partnerships and oversight of the Give2Gether program in APAC.
The successful candidate will bring deep expertise in sustainability and climate topics and reporting, with the ability to operate independently and effectively in a global corporate environment. This includes influencing stakeholders across different levels, markets, and time zones, and contributing within a high-performing, agile team.
Responsibilities include:
Climate & Sustainability Regulatory Reporting & Strategy:
- Support implementation of American Express’ global sustainability reporting framework, with a specific focus on APAC to ensure compliance with applicable sustainability regulations including the Australia Sustainability Reporting Standards, Modern Slavery, and other relevant regional regulatory disclosures.
- Engage with enterprise and local teams across the business and build cross-functional relationships to provide advisory and subject matter expertise and ensure alignment with the enterprise sustainability reporting framework and strategy.
- Help develop and support processes to track, monitor, and report key sustainability metrics across APAC (e.g., GHG inventory, climate risk metrics, etc.) and meet external reporting deadlines.
- Partner with local Controllership teams to support assurance efforts, including related to GHG emissions, governance, strategy, and climate risk disclosures.
- Engage and/or work as needed with third-party consultants to ensure timely and quality reporting and approvals.
Sustainability-Related Project Management, Advisory, and Governance:
- Serve as a climate subject matter expert for the company and the region, providing guidance on climate-related regulations and frameworks (e.g., ISSB/TCFD-aligned disclosures, SBTi), strategy, and regulatory compliance efforts.
- Advance the global corporate sustainability strategy across APAC, strengthening regional governance and working group alignment with enterprise priorities while reinforcing clear ownership and execution.
- Proactively communicate to leadership on deliverables, timelines, and progress reporting.
- Monitor emerging sustainability trends to inform potential opportunities in the region.
- Support required processes for approvals, controls, and compliance related to corporate sustainability initiatives and reporting.
Colleague Impact & Volunteering:
- Serve as the colleague engagement lead for the APAC region, including supporting the local Give2Gether program and helping to deliver local volunteering and donation efforts, including the annual colleague giving campaign.
- Support local relationships with current and prospective community and nonprofit partners in coordination with the Community Impact team.
Minimum Qualifications
At least 5-7 years of experience in a sustainability or climate related role, preferably in regulatory reporting, but open to related experience in assurance, climate risk, corporate sustainability, governance, legal or policy related roles.
- Bachelors’ degree required; Masters’ degree preferred in Sustainability Management, Sustainable Finance, Business Administration, Environmental Studies, etc.
- Extensive sustainability and climate experience, with deep knowledge of key regulations and frameworks (e.g., ASRS, ISSB, TCFD, GRI, SASB, Modern Slavery, GHG Protocol, SBTi) and their practical application in strategy and sustainability reporting
- Strong project management and organisational skills, able to independently manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and collaborate across global, cross-functional stakeholders.
- Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with sound judgment and the ability to operate under pressure with composure and professionalism.
- Outstanding interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual or professional proficiency in Japanese is strongly preferred, to aid in supporting regulatory reporting and engagement across APAC.
- Direct experience supporting corporate sustainability or climate regulatory reporting and assurance processes (e.g., GHG emissions), including coordination with audit, finance, or risk functions.
- Background in regulatory, policy, legal, or consulting roles related to sustainability or climate, particularly in sustainability and climate disclosures, GHG reporting, or risk frameworks.
