About Ampol and the role:
For over 100 years, we’ve been powering better journeys for all Australians. As Australia’s very own fuel brand we are committed to making those journeys easier by meeting Australia’s needs at every step with the care and service we all deserve. And, as we grow, we continue to evolve, to ensure we have low carbon solutions that will meet our customers’ energy needs well into the future.
We are seeking a skilled Commercial Manager, with specialisation in contract management, supplier relationship management, sourcing strategies, data analysis, and cost reduction, to dig into our data and refine and adapt our sourcing processes to drive down costs in a sustainable way.
You will play a vital role in our team by utilising your industry knowledge, verified external data points, and our source data to optimise our cost model and hone our pricing competitiveness. Collaborating cross-functionally across Ampol Carrier Operations and Ampol more broadly, you will report to the National Carrier Operations Manager and lead and drive the strategic value generation of all Bulk Fuels Cartage Carrier Contracts. You will also support the National Carrier Operations Manager in contractual negotiation, formation, implementation, and management. You’ll be adept at contractual governance and compliance, with ability to steward contractual variation and novation.
We’re really after someone who revels in rolling up their sleeves and getting stuck into the ins and outs of a contract for the purpose of understanding and extracting the commercial opportunities that can come from it. You’ll bring clear-thinking and pragmatic decision-making to our supplier relationships and can be counted on to navigate the occasional bump in the road. As a senior leader in the Carrier Operations team, you’ll be given freedom and autonomy to find new ways to collaboratively generate more value and develop long-term strategies for the growth of Ampol’s bulk fuels business.
You could be the one if you have…
- Commitment to Ampol’s values:
- Own it
- Connect to Win
- Find New Ways
- Never Stop Caring
- Make a Difference for Customers
- Experience in large scale commercial supply agreements – you know your way around contracts, their negotiation, implementation, and management;
- Great attention to detail – you care about getting it right the first time and making sure every step is sure-footed.
- Tertiary qualifications in supply chain logistics, commerce, business, law, or a related discipline
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills with both technical and non-technical individuals.
- Team-focus
- A growth mindset
This is a new role, and you’ll shape it, including by…
- Getting into the ‘nitty-gritty detail’ of freight costs to understand how and why they differ by carrier, region, and task;
- Completing a cost verification and validation review and negotiating updated cost inputs in our suppliers cost model;
- Collaborating with suppliers – big and small – to realise efficiencies through innovation and continuous improvement in sourcing;
- Leading negotiations of cartage agreements or rail freight contracts;
- Leading the documentation of agreements relating to new parcels of cartage work;
- Teaming up with our Carrier Contract Managers, Freight Solutions Team, and Scheduling Team to understand our operations and make recommendations to improve workflows;
- Discussing freight costing with our Carrier Contract Management Team and Freight Solutions Manager and tracking costs by supplier
- Contributing to weekly operational team meetings
