In Australia, we operate two open cut and three underground metallurgical coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, every year producing millions of tonnes of the highest quality hard coking coal for this purpose.
Job Description
We are currently seeking an experienced Dispatch Officer to assist in coordinating equipment logistics across all our production processes at our Capcoal Surface Operation in Middlemount, QLD.
As a Dispatch Officer, you will be responsible for the effective operation of the control room and its functions during a shift, providing a safe and efficient service to the Capcoal Surface Operation. You will be required to provide real time dispatching and monitoring of mining equipment (fixed/mobile) and personnel to ensure efficient use of resources. You will be required to work with a number of shift roles to ensure the site data integrity is of the highest possible standard and daily targets are met. When directing all tasks, safety must be at the forefront of all activities. Furthermore, a clear communication style is critical to the role, as a number of stakeholders are involved in your daily engagements.
Reporting to the Mining Superintendent, you will be responsible for managing and controlling the shift communication and monitoring strategies to enable safe and efficient operations to occur. The position also provides the focal point for communication within the mine from a production and safety perspective.
You will be tasked with systematically monitoring the mine environment and communicating changes and actions for safe response. You will have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the open cut coal mining environment, communication systems, emergency response and site safety requirements, and will be able to develop collaborative working relationships across Managers, Superintendents, Supervisors and crews.
Some of the key responsibilities but not limited too;
- Ensure 100% compliance of the 24 hour production plan
- Provide leadership and direction to the various equipment operators to ensure that the business and mine plan objectives are met and consistently achieved, according to the HSE policies
- Minimize hang time on dig machines and queued time on trucks to achieve KPIs
- Ensure the integrity of the mine model (road network, locations, equipment etc.) report any mine model issues
- Ensure accurate, statistical information is captured and recorded by the system
- Liaise with shift Supervisor and Engineers to minimize production and maintenance delays
- Ensure a smooth transition from off-going shift to current shift, and then from current shift to oncoming shift
- Assist the operations team to deliver production targets safely, optimally, and in accordance with the annual mine plan.
- Maintain short interval controls for all production areas and provide updates on performance to Superintendents and Management as required.
- Hold expert knowledge of emergency response and first aid equipment
- Responsible for the efficient allocation and management of the haul truck fleet
- Maintain the integrity of the Fleet Management System by monitoring all real time data to ensure that all data captured accurately reflects the status of current mining operations, and the utilization of equipment and resources.
- The coordination of communication between the field operations, Maintenance Department, Technical Services Department and CHPP
- The continued focus on the ‘on going’ reduction of lost productive time and the encouragement of a sustainable increase in productivity through an ‘on shift’ focus on managing delays, down time and capturing real time opportunities.
Qualifications
It is essential for the successful candidate to demonstrate prior experience and/or knowledge in the following:
To be successful in the role, 2 years’ experience in mining operations is preferred but not essential. Prior control room experience being highly desirable. As a large component of your role is dealing with computers, an intermediate knowledge of computer systems and Microsoft Office is essential. Additionally, emergency response experience and S1, 2, 3 would be favourable to have.
Overview:
- A competent and experienced user of either Fleet Management Systems such as Leica, Minestar or Modular
- Experience in a mine control role

- A high level of planning and problem-solving ability
- Previous heavy equipment operations experience of 2 years is required
- Minimum completion of year 10 at secondary school
- Knowledge of mine workplace safety requirements and procedure
- Ability to make effective, intuitive decisions
- S1 S2 S3 - desirable
Additional information
This is a full-time, permanent role on a rotating Dayshift / Nightshift roster, based at our Capcoal Surface Operation in Middlemount. This role is suitable for both residential and DIDO commuting.
