About ARTC
Join our team and be part of keeping the future of transport on track.
ARTC is a vital link in Australia’s transport supply chain – operating and maintaining the national rail network to connect our regions, cities and ports. We help enable the safe and efficient transit of freight and passenger trains across the country, managing more than 9,600km of rail track across five states and the lands of more than 50 First Nations.
About the Team
When you join the Safety & Systems team, you'll be part of the team that develops and maintains the systems, standards and technology that help keep our people, rail operators and communities safe. Safety is our number one priority and guides everything we do. Through safety leadership, technical expertise and continuous improvement, the team helps create a safer and more resilient rail network for Australia.
About the Opportunity
At ARTC, safety is at the heart of everything we do. We are looking for an experienced and engaging Safety Business Partner who is passionate about making a genuine difference to the safety and wellbeing of our people.
This is an opportunity to combine sound safety practices with a proactive, people-centred approach to managing risk and improving how work is done.
Working closely with operational leaders and frontline teams, you will play a key role in identifying emerging and often overlooked risks, constructively challenging established ways of working and influencing positive safety behaviours. With a strong presence in the field, you will build trusted relationships, encourage open conversations about risk and empower our people to take ownership of safety.
You will act as a trusted advisor, coach and partner, helping leaders make informed decisions and embedding practical safety improvements into everyday operations.
We welcome applications from individuals with strong operational backgrounds who have a passion for safety, a practical approach to managing risk and the confidence to build relationships, influence behaviours and challenge existing practices. Previous experience in a dedicated safety role is not essential.
This role requires travel to various work sites as needed, which may include occasional weekend travel to meet operational and project requirements.
To be successful, you will bring:
- A minimum Certificate IV in Work Health and
Safety (WHS).
- Experience working in an operational or
high-risk environment, with a strong understanding of frontline
activities, operational challenges and workplace risks.
- A practical, risk-based mindset, with the
ability to identify potential hazards, challenge existing practices and
develop solutions that work in an operational environment.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building
skills, with the ability to build trust and credibility with operational
leaders and frontline teams.
- Excellent communication skills, with the
confidence to have constructive but challenging conversations and
positively influence safety behaviours.
- An assertive yet approachable communication
style, with the ability to respectfully challenge decisions, ask the right
questions and influence positive outcomes.
- Sound judgement and the ability to balance
operational priorities with effective risk management.
- A proactive, collaborative approach and a
genuine commitment to improving safety outcomes through coaching,
engagement and practical support.
- A current Class C driver's licence and
willingness to undertake intrastate and interstate travel, which may
include occasional weekends.
Highly regarded:
Previous experience in a Safety Advisor or
Safety Business Partner role, tertiary qualifications in WHS, experience with
ICAM or similar investigation methodologies, and exposure to rail or other
safety-critical industries will be highly regarded.
What do we want from you?
We are looking for someone who brings more than technical safety knowledge. You will be a confident communicator and natural relationship builder who knows how to influence, challenge and support people at all levels of an organisation.
You will be comfortable spending time in operational environments, asking thoughtful questions and working alongside frontline teams to understand their challenges. Importantly, you will have the confidence to challenge established practices while maintaining trust and credibility.
Above all, we are looking for someone who can build trust, influence change and inspire others to think differently about safety.
If you are passionate about making a meaningful difference and want to help shape a proactive safety culture across ARTC, we would love to hear from you.
