About the Opportunity

Stealth is the defining characteristic of a submarine which provides the Collins Class Submarine (CCSM) with the potency to effectively complete the missions required of the Royal Australian Navy. Reporting to the Signatures Manager, you will utilise your noise and vibration expertise to maintain and enhance the stealth of the CCSM by delivering complex engineering activities across all ASC projects.

Integral to this role will be your excellent teamwork and communication skills showcasing your ability to work collaboratively with other engineering departments and the broader ASC team.

Responsibilities

  • Apply acoustic engineering principles to perform calculations in support of acoustics and signatures engineering task work
  • Perform noise and vibration data collection, testing, analysis and reporting. This may include the assessment of system and equipment performance by trials at ASC, at equipment supplier’s premises and on-board submarines at sea.
  • Develop, or assist in the development of documentation such as drawings, specifications, test and trials procedures (including safety assessments), concessions, engineering reports and work instructions.
  • Investigate signatures defects and problems reported from submarines in service. Support in the development of remedial and corrective designs and actions to overcome and prevent re-occurrence of these defects.
  • Contribute to the CCSM Life of Type Extension, update and upgrade of systems, and in service support of the fleet.
  • Provide signatures engineering advice to management and to other ASC departments as tasked.

Skills & Experiences

  • A relevant Engineering Degree or relevant Science Degree, and appropriate experience.
  • Experience in noise and vibration control of machinery systems in the defence, marine or industrial environment is desirable
  • Experience in acoustic design within buildings, architectural and environmental contexts is desirable
  • Experience in underwater acoustics modelling and behaviour is desirable
  • Experience with signature and/or noise and vibration measurement equipment and analysis tools (such as Bruel and Kjaer Data Acquisition Hardware and PULSE package) is desirable.
  • Experience with various engineering modelling tools (e.g. FEA, BEM, SEA) and software packages (e.g. Matlab, LabView, ANSYS) is desirable.
  • Ability to recognise and set appropriate priorities and work standards.

Eligibility

This role requires Australian citizenship, a current National Police Clearance, an Australian Defence Security Clearance and an ability to access protected US defence technology. Your eligibility for this role is dependent on you obtaining and maintaining such clearances and approvals.
