You will be joining a highly specialised and technical team based in our Sydney Haymarket office. Reporting to the Design Manager, as part of our network and digital team the Senior Engineer undertakes expert engineering and technical activities to support a safe, reliable, sustainable and affordable network for our customers. This role requires a high level of technical design knowledge for advice and expertise across brownfield projects across substations and other activities. This role is not a direct people leader role although advice and management to onsite contractors will be a part of the role, along with reviewing and approving work from other Engineers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Leadership: Lead and undertake the conceptual and detailed design of primary HV substation systems (up to 132kV with indoor and outdoor switchgear), including busbar configurations, equipment layouts, AC light and power designs, and electrical clearances. Provide ongoing support to Ausgrid Project Managers and field staff during the construction phase of substation projects
  • Design Quality & Oversight: Review and sign off on technical deliverables, ensuring all designs comply with relevant national standards (e.g., AS/NZS, IEC, IEEE) and Ausgrid network standards. Co-ordinate, and manage external design and engineering consultants
  • Project Management: Drive discipline design delivery from concept through to construction, managing timelines, budgets, and multidisciplinary interfaces (civil, secondary, structural).
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Represent primary engineering function in interactions with internal and external stakeholders.

To be successful, you will have the following skills & experience:

Requirements

  • Education: Recognised bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and eligible for membership of Engineers Australia.
  • Experience: 10+ years of extensive experience in HV/EHV substation primary design brownfield projects.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in the application of key industry standards (e.g. AS2067, AS3000, AS3008 etc) to designs of HV substations and equipment.
  • Software Proficiency: Expertise in relevant engineering software (MS excel, AutoCAD, word for writing briefs, reports and specifications).
  • Accreditation: Professional Engineer status (e.g., CPEng or RPEQ) is advantageous.
  • Leadership: Proven track record of leading technical teams on large-scale infrastructure or renewable energy projects. Demonstrated ability to supervise and mentor junior staff.
