Help Power Victoria's Future

Through purpose and people - not just through the infrastructure we operate, but through the way we show up for each other, our customers’ and our communities. The future of energy is in our hands. Let’s shape it together.

Every day, millions of Victorians rely on a safe, reliable electricity supply. As Victoria's energy landscape evolves, there has never been a more important time to be part of the team responsible for keeping the power flowing while enabling the transition to a cleaner, smarter energy future.

As a Network Controller in Training (Distribution), you'll embark on a development journey toward becoming a qualified Network Controller, one of the most critical operational roles in the electricity industry.

Working within our Network Operations & Delivery Control Room, this role will see you delivering safe and timely network switching and access to the AusNet Distribution network, supporting planned works, responding to network incidents and developing the expertise required to make real-time decisions that impact customers and communities across the state.

This role is based in Melbourne CBD and operates within our Distribution Control Room, under the guidance of experienced Senior Network Controllers.

What you’ll be doing in this role:

  • Build your technical expertise in network operations, safety, and regulatory compliance
  • Support the safe delivery of planned work programs through network switching and access coordination
  • Learn to monitor, assess and communicate network events to support operational performance, customer outcomes and network reliability
  • Assist with the management of unplanned incidents and emergency events in a calm, structured and safety-focused manner
  • Investigate network events using protection data, alarms, SCADA, ADMS and network operating information
  • Develop and maintain operational procedures and support the integrity of critical control room systems
  • Identify network risks, anomalies and opportunities to improve safety, reliability and operational performance
  • Review and support switching programs to ensure safe access to the network and successful delivery of works
  • Collaborate with experienced Network Controllers and field teams during periods of heightened network activity
  • Take ownership of your learning and development, building the skills and experience required to progress into a Network Controller role

What you'll bring:

We're looking for a motivated and resilient individual who is excited by the opportunity to build a long-term career in network operations and thrives in a high-responsibility environment.

  • Foundational knowledge of AusNet’s Electricity Distribution Network elements, operational procedures and industry standards
  • Understanding of electrical safety principles, including the VESI Code of Practice (Blue/Green Book) and associated operating practices
  • Knowledge of power system fundamentals, including AC circuit theory and network operations
  • Exposure to system protection schemes and electrical switching practices within a distribution environment
  • An ability to remain composed, focused and make sound decisions in fast-paced and dynamic situations
  • Strong analytical, communication and problem-solving skills
  • A commitment to continuous learning, operational excellence and safety leadership
  • Advanced Diploma of ESI – Power Systems (or equivalent) is highly regarded

Why join us?

This is more than a training role. It's an opportunity to build a specialist career in one of the most vital functions within the energy industry. You'll receive mentorship from experienced Network Controllers, develop highly sought-after operational skills, and play an active role in powering Victoria's communities while helping shape the future of energy.

If you're looking for a career where your decisions matter, your development is invested in, and your work has a direct impact on millions of Victorians, we'd love to hear from you.

We’re committed to building an inclusive culture and a diverse workforce. We believe different perspectives are essential to our success, and we encourage all applicants to apply. If you need any adjustments during the recruitment process, we're happy to discuss how we can support you.

At AusNet, we bring the energy! Ready to make your impact? Apply directly now!
