About the Role
WAIO operates five mines across three ‘hubs’ in the Pilbara. We have an opportunity for a Superintendent to lead the Newman Hydrogeology team to develop, maintain the conceptual hydrogeological understanding of our groundwater systems, and use the BHP business processes to translate this knowledge into effective dewatering and surplus water management schemes.
One-third of the ore in BHP’s short term portfolio is below the water table and this is set to increase. Strategic and efficient deposit scale dewatering and innovative water management is critical to enable mining of this business-critical ore. This role, you will work closely with operational, mine planning, project and environment teams to deliver water management solutions that are integrated with our business plan and set us up for success.
The role reports to the Manager Water Planning and is a part of the integrated Resource Engineering planning group. Your team of up to 7 mine water planners are a diverse group of motivated hydrogeologists located on-site and in Perth, Site travel will be expected.
Responsibilities include:
- Communicate water management considerations to stakeholders across teams;
- Develop & improve operating frameworks for the team;
- Drive the integration of water activity into business processes & systems;
- Developing & maintain the conceptual hydrological knowledge for the hub for business decisions;
- Develop dewatering & surplus water plans at the strategic & tactical horizons integrated with mine plans;
- Providing Hydrogeology subject matter expertise to new mining projects & water infrastructure studies;
- Assess & optimise the hydrogeological performance of dewatering & surplus schemes;
- Co-ordinate the “compliance to plan” reporting of dewatering & surplus operation;
Provide input to the assessment & management of water-related geotechnical risks; and; - Embedding Water Stewardship into mine water management solutions.
About You
- Degree in Geoscience, Engineering, or Environmental Science. Post Grad hydrogeology desirable;
- Strong communication & collaboration skills;
- Excellent coaching & people development skills;
- Ability to apply technical knowledge & understand of mine water management requirements & develop effective controls to manage mine water risks;
- Understanding of groundwater occurrence, flow, chemistry, & the properties of hydrostratigraphy; and
- Ability to develop & communicate hydrogeological conceptual models which support impact assessment, dewatering, surplus water management & mine water supply.
