The opportunity
The SKA-Low Telescope is an international science and engineering project that will form part of the SKA Observatory, a global next-generation radio astronomy facility. Located in remote Western Australia on Wajarri Yamaji Country, SKA-Low will be one of two SKA telescopes and will provide new capabilities for exploring the Universe. In Australia, CSIRO is collaborating with the SKA Observatory to support the construction and operation of the telescope, with teams working across Geraldton, Perth and the telescope site.
The HSE team supports this work by coordinating Health, Safety and Environment activities across the project’s operational and site-based environments, helping teams work safely and meet HSE requirements.
Reporting to the Senior HSE Advisor, you will support the team with training and compliance activities, HSE records and systems, risk assessments and investigations, and the follow-up of actions. You will gain practical experience across both the Engineering Operations Centre in Geraldton and the SKA-Low telescope site.
You will bring good organisation, communication and time-management skills, ideally with some experience in administration, training, compliance or Health and Safety. Formal HSE qualifications or extensive experience are not essential. You will receive on-the-job mentoring and support to build your HSE knowledge and practical experience.
Based in Geraldton, you will regularly travel to the SKA-Low telescope site, generally every second week, with occasional travel to Perth.
If you’re interested in Health and Safety and keen to learn, develop and gain hands-on experience while contributing to a major international project, this could be a great next step in your career, and we’d love to hear from you!
Your high-level duties will include:
- Supporting the implementation and ongoing review and improvement of SKAO project HSE plans, procedures and the HSE Management System.
- Supporting SKA-Low teams’ training requirements by coordinating training bookings, qualifications and certificates, maintaining training registers, and coordinating integrated team training exercises to test site Emergency Response Plans.
- Supporting teams to complete risk assessments and making recommendations to reduce risk exposure, and assisting with the timely close-out of investigations and corrective actions.
- Supporting the SKA-Low HSE Committee by maintaining the action register and working with action owners to close out agreed tasks.
- Supporting HSE compliance, document and records management across online systems, including SharePoint, Confluence and Rapid Global, and accurately maintaining records of inspections, assurance, training and other HSE activities.
