The opportunity
CSIRO’s Australian e-Health Research Centre is seeking a Senior Solution Architect to provide technical leadership through Sparked, the Australian FHIR Accelerator. Working at the forefront of national digital health interoperability, you will help shape the standards that enable health information to be exchanged safely, consistently and effectively across Australia’s healthcare system. Sparked brings together government, healthcare, industry, clinicians, consumers and standards organisations to develop and support nationally consistent approaches to digital health information exchange.
In this senior technical role, you will set architectural direction and lead the design, authoring and stewardship of Australian HL7 FHIR standards, implementation guides and supporting technical artefacts. You will translate complex clinical, policy, business and technical requirements into practical, scalable solutions, while providing authoritative advice to healthcare organisations, government agencies, software implementers and standards communities.
We are seeking two established Solution Architects who bring strong architecture capability from the outset, with the experience and judgement to operate autonomously while collaborating within a small, geographically dispersed team. Ideally, you will bring substantial digital health and FHIR experience; however, we also welcome candidates with exceptional experience developing community-led standards in other complex environments, particularly those involving government, regulators, industry and multiple organisations. You will be comfortable building consensus across diverse stakeholder groups, navigating ambiguity and providing authoritative technical advice on nationally significant standards and interoperability initiatives. Domestic travel will be required as part of the role.
Your high-level duties will include:
- Setting the technical and architectural direction for FHIR standards and interoperability initiatives, aligned with AEHRC, Business Unit and national digital health priorities.
- Applying advanced expertise in HL7 FHIR, health informatics, systems integration and the Australian healthcare environment to address complex, ambiguous or emerging interoperability challenges.
- Evaluating emerging technologies, standards and implementation approaches, and make evidence-based recommendations on architecture, design and technical direction.
- Providing authoritative advice on complex, sensitive or contentious technical matters and guide issues through to an agreed outcome.
- Leading and directly undertaking the design, authoring and maintenance of HL7 AU FHIR standards, implementation guides, conformance resources, test suites, examples and supporting technical artefacts.
- Translating clinical, business, policy and technical requirements into coherent standards-based solutions that preserve national consistency and address agreed stakeholder needs.
- Developing solution designs, system views, architecture models and technical documentation to guide implementation, system development and refactoring.

- Demonstrated experience leading the architecture, design and development of complex software systems across diverse technology, integration and deployment environments.
- Knowledge of the health domain and HL7 standards, with substantial experience applying the HL7 FHIR specification to health information exchange and interoperability solutions.
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing secure, scalable and standards-based APIs and system integration solutions.
- Demonstrated ability to translate complex clinical, business and technical requirements into practical standards-based architectures, designs and implementation guidance.
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership, build consensus and communicate complex concepts effectively across multidisciplinary teams, standards communities, government, industry and other stakeholder groups.
