The opportunity
The Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO) is leading a global effort to build one of the world’s largest science facilities, with next-generation telescopes set to drive astrophysics research, technological innovation, and skills development. The Australian SKA Regional Centre (AusSRC) plays a key role in this mission by supporting global SKA science communities and enabling advanced data processing for groundbreaking discoveries.
As part of this effort, AusSRC is seeking a skilled Cloud DevOps Engineer to join our team in Perth, Western Australia. With SKA construction progressing, we are entering a critical phase in developing the SKA Regional Centre Network (SRCNet), a global system of data centres that will process and manage SKA’s vast Exabyte-scale data. Scientists will rely on SRCNet to access, visualize, and analyze telescope data, advancing open science and reproducibility.
This role focuses on developing and operating cloud platforms, integrating storage services, and shaping the future of Australia’s SKA science data centre. The ideal candidate has experience in cloud deployment and operations, strong collaboration skills, and a commitment to working with global partners. Occasional domestic and international travel may be required.
Your duties will include:

Contribute to the design, development, deployment, and maintenance of a research cloud ecosystem.

Collaborate with teams to ensure seamless integration of infrastructure and applications.

Work with cross-functional teams to identify and resolve operational issues, ensuring system reliability and performance.

Communicate progress regularly and demonstrate system functionality.

Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation on infrastructure, processes, and workflows.

Perform other duties as required.

Salary: AU$114k - AU$123k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:
Essential
Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.

Tertiary or graduate qualification in Science, Computing, or Engineering, or equivalent experience.

Proven ability to manage workloads and meet targets in a dynamic, collaborative environment.

Strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment in complex, distributed settings.

Experience managing complex resources, including compute servers, storage systems, networks, collaboration tools, and software.
Desirable

Proficiency in programming languages, particularly Python, and experience with source code management tools.

Experience with OpenStack or comparable cloud environments, including AWS and Oracle.

Knowledge of internet technologies, including web servers and database servers.

Familiarity with version control and CI/CD tools such as Git and Jenkins.

Experience with automation, testing, or provisioning tools such as Ansible, Puppet, MAAS, and Jenkins.

Proven track record in designing and deploying new services or platforms for researchers or clients.

Familiarity with cybersecurity best practices, AI technologies, and Agile methodologies.
