The opportunity

CSIRO’s Energy Research Unit is seeking a hands-on technician to provide technical expertise across a range of carbon capture projects. You will have the opportunity to build a rewarding career while contributing to nationally significant carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) research. As part of the Carbon Capture Materials Acceleration Centre (CCMAC), you’ll be involved in the day‑to‑day operation of advanced experimental equipment, gaining hands‑on experience with automated mechatronic systems, instrumentation, and laboratory processes.

You will work closely with experienced scientists, engineers, and technicians, applying established technical practices while gradually developing your capability to adapt equipment and techniques to meet varied research needs. The role provides variety, stability, and exposure to cutting‑edge infrastructure in a safety‑focused environment, with clear opportunities to strengthen your practical skills, judgement, and confidence under guidance from senior staff. Your high-level duties will include:

• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot automated mechatronic and laboratory equipment.
• Calibrate and verify instrumentation to ensure accurate and reliable measurements.
• Support day-to-day operations of the carbon capture facility, ensuring equipment uptime and workflow efficiency.
• Manage inventory, consumables, and spare parts to support ongoing research activities.
• Assemble, modify, and implement incremental improvements to experimental devices and procedures.
• Work closely with scientists and engineers to provide practical technical support without requiring independent research.
• Follow established safety protocols and contribute to a safe, well-organized laboratory environment.
• Perform other duties as directed.

Role particulars

Location and office arrangements: Waterford, Perth, WA

Salary: AU$76k – AU$96k per annum (pro rata for part-time), plus 15.4% superannuation

Tenure & work schedule: 3 year specified term, full time.

As the successful candidate, you will bring:

Essential

• A relevant trade certificate/diploma/bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience in TAFE-qualified or equivalent in mechanical, electrical, or mechatronic fields with hands-on laboratory and instrumentation experience
• Hands-on experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting laboratory or mechatronic equipment, calibrating instruments, assembling and managing lab inventory and safety
• Proficiency in instrument operation and calibration, mechanical assembly and troubleshooting, laboratory equipment maintenance, and safe, organized technical work practices.

Desirable

• Experience in carbon capture, energy, or materials research environments
• Knowledge of mechatronic systems, automation, or control software
• Experience with data collection, logging, and basic analysis from instruments
• Exposure to chemical or materials handling in a lab or pilot facility
• Familiarity with small-scale prototyping
