The Opportunity
CSL is hiring a Senior Scientist to join our Product Characterisation team, based in Parkville. You will contribute to the development, implementation and maintenance of mass spectrometry-based scalable analytical methods to support Product Development activities. You will plan and conduct mass spectrometry-based studies supporting characterisation of recombinant molecules including identification and quantification of product-related variants and impurities.
You will lead and implement strategies supporting product quality attribute discovery and assessment, and pursue product development activities support.
Reporting to the Manager of Product Development, your main responsibilities include:
- Develop and refine industry standard workflows supporting recombinant and plasma derived biotherapeutic characterisation, and integrate MS data analytics pipelines towards regulatory guidelines to support product development activities
- Through a combination of MS-based and non-MS based protein analytical techniques, identify, characterise and correlate post-translational modifications and their associated heterogeneities in recombinant proteins with emphasis on those affecting product efficacy and safety
- Maintain current awareness of scientific/technical strategies and innovative technological developments in mass spectrometry, specifically in biologics and complex biotherapeutics implementation.
- Work together with and provide expertise to other team members to achieve specified research project goals within defined time parameters. Leading a small team of scientists, providing guidance to more junior scientists
Your Skills and Experience:
- Postgraduate degree (preferably PhD, MSc or equivalent degree) and / or experience in relevant discipline
- 8+ years relevant industry experience with BS, 6+ years relevant industry experience with MS or 2+ years relevant industry experience with PhD in the field of mass spectrometry-based protein characterisation
- Demonstrated experience in analytical chemistry with background in protein characterisation using multiple mass spectrometry-based techniques and classical approaches such as SDS-PAGE, western blotting, electrophoresis and gel chromatography
- Expertise in operating and maintaining mass spectrometry instrumentation, particularly as applied to protein, peptide and glycan analysis (e.g. ESI-MS/MS, MALDI-MS/MS, knowledge of qTOF's, QqQ and Orbitrap instruments).
- Proficient in mass spectrometry data analysis tools, specifically in-depth protein characterisation, product attribute validation and monitoring
- Experience in product development techniques such as understanding of the parameters involved in the scale up of product development processes
