Job Description

The Opportunity:

We have an opportunity available for a Director, Antibody Discovery & Protein Engineering (ADPE) to join our Molecular Biology Department, based in Melbourne. Reporting to the Head of Molecular Biology, you will lead a team of experienced scientists responsible for the design, discovery, engineering and characterisation of cutting-edge therapeutic antibodies and proteins. You will lead engineering efforts focused on phage display and employing other protein display platforms

Working closely with other leaders and scientists within ADPE and global functions, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality candidates into the therapeutic pipeline. You will develop high-level strategies and actively drive the improvement of physical and computational technologies for drug discovery.

The ability to hire, lead, motivate, train, and develop staff in line with CSL’s strategic objectives are also important elements of this position. You will be responsible for the communication and alignment with other CSL functions involved in the development of therapeutic antibodies and proteins, including ADPE Marburg and other relevant functions at Marburg, Bern, and Melbourne.

Key Skills & Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute therapeutic antibody and protein engineering projects using principally protein display and computational methods to deliver cutting-edge therapeutics which meet the highest industry standards for quality, developability and reduced immunogenic potential

  • Collaborate with Research Therapeutic Area Leads to develop and deliver on strategies to support drug discovery, identify required ADPE technology platform development opportunities, and deploy ADPE experts who represent ADPE technologies and best practices

  • Drive the continuous evolution of platform technologies, by leading the integration of novel physical and computational approaches for the engineering of therapeutic proteins

  • Work to develop overall competency of staff, actively facilitating learning and development opportunities

  • Maintain and build CSL’s research profile within academic and industry networks

  • Establish and maintain a network of expert CROs and external partners, to complement capabilities and strengthen capacity

Qualifications/Experience:

  • PhD in a relevant scientific discipline closely related to antibody and protein engineering

  • Minimum of 8+ years relevant industry experience in a biological drug discovery environment

  • Demonstrated ability to manage highly effective scientific teams

  • A recognised leader in therapeutic antibody/protein engineering and molecular biology, as demonstrated by a track record of high-quality scientific publications and patent inventorship in protein engineering

  • Extensive experience with phage display for the discovery and engineering of antibodies is required

  • Experience with NGS technologies for protein engineering is highly desirable

  • Experience with machine learning approaches for antibody/protein engineering is preferred
