ABOUT THE ROLE
The Practice Lead, Delivery Operations leads “Delivery Operations” practice and is accountable for the effectiveness, consistency and maturity of delivery across the portfolio at Custom Fleet.
You’ll own the delivery framework across initiation, planning, governance, reporting, escalation and closure, and you’ll directly lead and develop our Project Managers capability to deliver outcomes with clarity, pace and confidence.
This is a hands‑on player‑coach role that blends portfolio-level oversight with selective delivery contribution stepping in early where risk is emerging, momentum is slipping or complexity needs stronger delivery leadership. This role can be based in either Melbourne or Sydney
Essential duties:
- Own and maintain the delivery framework across the portfolio, including standards for mobilisation, planning, governance, status reporting, escalation and closure.
- Evolve delivery standards based on observed portfolio performance, risk patterns and delivery outcomes ensuring the framework enables delivery rather than constraining it.
- Reinforce delivery discipline through coaching, intervention, and example particularly where optimism or complexity erodes good practice.
- Maintain clear expectations for the role of Project Managers across initiatives of varying scale and complexity.
- Maintain end‑to‑end visibility of delivery capacity across the portfolio, including Project Management and Change capability.
- Retain accountability for outcomes irrespective of resourcing model.
- Hold direct accountability for the performance, development and progression of all Project Managers
- Ensure change impact, readiness, and adoption risks are visible to sponsors and reflected in delivery planning and governance decisions.
Other duties:
- Work closely with the Portfolio Coordinator to ensure delivery status and financial inputs are accurate, timely and aligned.
- Undertake other duties aligned to the nature, scope and level of responsibility of the role.
ABOUT YOU
The successful candidate will portray the following:
Essential:
- Demonstrated senior experience leading delivery operations, project management or large‑scale programme environments within complex organisations.
- Strong delivery judgement, balancing pace, control and transparency under pressure.
- Deep understanding of delivery disciplines across agile, hybrid and structured environments tailoring approach to context rather than enforcing a single methodology.
- Proven capability building and leading delivery teams, developing Project Managers toward increased scope, thematic depth and senior sponsorship engagement.
- Experience managing delivery capacity at portfolio scale, forecasting constraints and making trade‑off decisions aligned to organisational priorities.
- Strong grasp of governance, escalation and portfolio control mechanisms with confidence to intervene early.
- Ability to integrate Change Management into delivery practice not treat it as a parallel activity.
- Leadership style grounded in accountability, clarity, and influence rather than hierarchy or process enforcement.
Other:
- Comfort operating in ambiguous, fast‑moving environments while maintaining delivery discipline and stakeholder confidence.
Education & Experience
Essential:
- Extensive experience ideally 10+ years in project delivery, programme management, delivery leadership or closely related senior roles within complex organisations.
- Proven experience leading delivery teams at scale, including direct accountability for Project Managers and Change capability.
- Demonstrated experience operating at portfolio level, balancing delivery demand, capacity and organisational priorities.
- Track record of building or materially improving delivery practices, standards or operating models.
- Experience partnering with senior leaders and sponsors to manage delivery risk, trade‑offs and expectations.
Other:
- Experience operating within a PMO/EPMO/portfolio governance environment.
- Exposure to global delivery or enterprise governance frameworks.
- Relevant certifications such as PMP, Prince2, Agile or Change Management.
