What will your typical day look like?
This is a permanent role, as a senior database administrator, you will be involved in:
- This role is mix of team leadership, coaching and hands on technical work during which you will be taking ownership of major projects, or managing critical situations.
- Working alongside the current DBA manager to co-lead your capable, innovative team of SQL Server DBAs
- Building clear goals, defining both your own, and your teams focus whilst taking ownership and accountability for issues that arise day by day.
- Working in a high paced environment solving complex problems, and managing competing priorities whilst supporting your team and the wider ITS Teams
- Navigating complex challenges and dealing with multiple stakeholders
- Sharing and growing your expertise, encouraging knowledge transfer and consultation across all parts of the organisation.
- Providing database administration support for both BAU and projects
- Ensuring database environments are managed, and processes followed, in line with defined practices.
- Identifying options and determining the best way to ensure database environments are secure, recoverable, and maintained to high standards.
- Ensuring the team “do the right thing” and adhere to compliance requirements
- Responding to and resolving tickets within SLA’s.
- Participating and sharing your thoughts in meetings both internal within ITS & with our key business stakeholders
About the team
The DBA team are part of Enterprise application services within the IT business unit, with six DBAs based in Sydney, they are a very friendly supportive team working in a fast-paced environment.
The work is administering databases for the Australian firm, not directly for the firm’s clients. The majority of SQL Server on premise is SQL 2019 with some SQL 2017/2016 along with Azure SQL, Synapse, ADF and ADLS with an increase in support work on the cloud data platforms moving forward.
The work involves a mix of BAU/Operational and project work including but not limited to actioning ServiceNow incidents/tasks/change requests, patching, password rotation, encryption, deployments, performance tuning, configuration, SQL/PowerShell scripting, least privilege role definitions, data masking, capacity planning, backup/restores, monitoring, troubleshooting issues, providing guidance to developers, adhering to compliance controls

You are someone with:
- A strong drive and commitment to continually strive for excellence and measurable improvement

- Minimum 7+ years as a Microsoft SQL Server database administrator
- A strong database development background, a passion for solving complex problems and a talent for database architecture
- A proactive, collaborative style who takes initiative and ownership of tasks working with autonomy and minimal supervision.
- Expertise in installation, database server builds, applying patches, upgrading, configuring, trouble shooting of SQL SERVER 2016/2017/2019/SQL Azure
- Strong SQL skills including the ability to review and refactor code
- Experience with PowerShell scripting for automation
- Highly skilled at troubleshooting and a focus performance tuning
- A love for troubleshooting and resolving complex technical issues, striving to understand the root cause and how to improve on processes.
- An ability to deep dive into SQL configuration and code to persevere to issue resolution
- Sound knowledge and experience in configuring solutions - AlwaysOn Availability Groups, Log shipping, Failover clustering and transactional replication
- Hands on experience with database encryption
- Experience in a SQL DevOps/Continuous delivery environment highly desirable
- Must be security focused with experience in ensuring adherence to least privilege access controls
- Experience participating in disaster recovery testing
- Good knowledge in administering PowerBI, SSRS, SSIS, SSAS, ADF, Synapse
- Experience with data masking and privatisation
- Experience with AWS/MongoDB/PostgreSQL database administration desirable
