The role
Consumer Protection promotes fair trading and consumer protection across Western Australia. Within Consumer Protection, the Conciliation and Trader Intervention Branch (the branch) undertakes activities helping business and consumers resolve disputes.

The Assessment Coordinator plays a pivotal role in Consumer Protection, leading the assessment of complaints and enquiries from a wide range of sources. This role requires the application of key legislation—including the Australian Consumer Law (WA), Retirement Villages Act 1992 and Residential Tenancies Act 1987 to determine how best the agency can assist and what level of response is appropriate.
As a subject matter expert, the Assessment Coordinator navigates complex and often ambiguous matters, including those that sit across jurisdictions or fall within the remit of other regulators. The role requires sound judgement to ensure matters are appropriately triaged, referred where necessary, and handled with care to support timely and effective outcomes for consumers.
Working closely with a small team, the Assessment Coordinator leads the assessment, triage and handling of complaints, providing guidance and oversight to ensure consistent and high-quality decision-making. This includes coaching team members, supporting capability development, and contributing to a collaborative and solutions-focused team environment.
The role is both strategic and operational. On any given day, the Assessment Coordinator may identify emerging issues that present risks to the community or the department, recommend practical solutions, and lead proactive activities such as online sweeps or information-gathering exercises. The role also involves engaging constructively with external regulators and stakeholders, including making warm referrals and sharing information to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
In addition, the Assessment Coordinator contributes to continuous improvement by identifying process enhancements and providing feedback to ensure Consumer Protection remains responsive to changing community needs.

While this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, it may also be used to fil other similar vacancies (permanent, fixed-term, full-time or part-time) within the department for the next 12 months, from the date that the recruitment breach period has been finalised.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a permanent appointment, applicants must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or have a visa to live and work indefinitely in Australia at the time of application. Applicants with a valid visa to work and live in Australia for a specific duration may be assessed and considered suitable for similar fixed term vacancies that arise.
To work for LGIRS, you must consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and obtain a clearance before you start. If deemed suitable, LGIRS will coordinate and pay for your NCCHC as part of your pre-employment checks.
