The role

As Assistant General Counsel, you will be part of the close knit leadership team. You will have a real say in the decisions impacting the team, and actively coach and mentor junior lawyers. Assistant General Counsel leads the provision of legal advice and representation in the highest profile and most sensitive matters. It can involve leading a multi-disciplinary team of lawyers, paralegals and experts working on larger matters with senior counsel.

Legal matters include administrative law proceedings, regulatory investigations and prosecutions and statutory interpretation with a focus on the Work Health and Safety Act 2020.

The work includes providing legal opinions on prosecution briefs, publications, media releases, policy and legislative development and much more.

You will have the opportunity to appear as lead counsel and junior counsel and conduct your matters with real autonomy whilst supported by a team of lawyers who are leaders in safety and health law. Our clients work across all industries, and they are experts in their fields. You will work across mining and petroleum, transport, construction, manufacturing, dangerous goods, primary industries and collaborate with clients who are technical experts such as scientists, psychologists, engineers and people with a wide range of industry experience.

While this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, it may also be used to fill other similar vacancies (permanent, fixed-term, full-time or part-time) within the department for the next 12 months, from the date that the recruitment breach period has been finalised.

To be eligible for appointment, applicants must have a valid working visa (for fixed term appointments) or be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or have a visa to live and work indefinitely in Australia (for permanent appointments) at the time of application. You will also require an Australian Practising Certificate.
