In alignment with the WA Government’s Public Sector Reform (March 2025), this position will initially sit within DEMIRS but will join the newly formed Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration from 1 July 2025.

The Aboriginal Empowerment Unit
This position sits within the Aboriginal Empowerment Unit (AEU), which was established to coordinate and deliver the department’s Aboriginal Empowerment Initiative (AEI).
The AEU works to ensure the policies, practices and administration of the department’s services are appropriate and respectful of Aboriginal people and assists to establish formal pathways for Aboriginal people to contribute to enhanced outcomes for their communities.
The role
Join our dynamic team as a Research Officer, where you'll play a crucial role in supporting senior officers to achieve outcomes that advance Aboriginal empowerment through planning, research and analysis. Your work will contribute to shaping policy and legislative initiatives by gathering, analysing, and presenting information in clear and impactful formats. In this role, you'll collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders, including industry peak bodies, unions, employers, service providers, and government agencies, fostering effective working relationships to drive meaningful outcomes.
Your skills and experience in research and analysis will be key to your success in this role. You will also bring to the team your excellent organisation and planning skills, as well as your experience engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders, including with Aboriginal people.

While this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, it may also be used to fill other similar vacancies (permanent, fixed-term, full-time or part-time) within the department for the next 12 months, from the date that the recruitment breach period has been finalised.
To be eligible for appointment, applicants must have a valid working visa (for fixed term appointments) or be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or have a visa to live and work indefinitely in Australia (for permanent appointments) at the time of application.
