BUMA Australia is a growing mining services company with five solid mining contracts and around 1200 employees. We recently announced a five year extension with BMA and a services contract for the new Broadmeadow East mine and expect to announce further growth soon.
In December 2021 we finalised the purchase of the Open Cut Mining business of Downer on the East Coast. This acquisition included the transition of people, mining services contracts, assets, systems and intellectual property from a business which has successfully provided mining and civil services in diverse locations and across many commodities for over 100 years. Currently BUMA Australia successfully manages operations across five sites and we have plans to continue to expand and grow.
Everything we do is underpinned by our vision - to be a leading mining service provider contributing to future energy solutions - and is supported by our core values of safety, integrity, innovation, collaboration and people.
We are now seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to assist the General Counsel with the provision of legal advice and support to the operational and corporate departments of the company.
Specifically, the role is accountable for:
- Reviewing and drafting contracts and contract administration processes to ensure commercial and contractual protection of BUMA’s interests
- Input into and participation in senior level negotiations where necessary
- Providing expert legal advice, information, briefs and other documents to ensure BUMA operates within the law and is able to meet contractual, statutory and regulatory requirements
- Reviewing and providing advice to internal clients regarding compliance and statutory obligations and ensuring appropriate risk management mechanisms are in place
- Providing contractual interpretation and advice on contractual disputes
- Assisting in preparing information and briefing papers for company management and with the development of company procedures
- Researching international legal issues and advising on contractual obligations
- Advising on industrial relations and employment matters
- Managing claims and disputes
- Managing and providing instructions to external legal service providers
- Supervision of allocated Legal Counsel or paralegal staff work activities and task assignments
You will have:
- 6 + years post-admission experience providing quality legal interpretation and advice in a commercial setting
- Ability to hold an unrestricted Practising Certificate
- Knowledge of the business of the resources industry or an aligned industry, or the ability to acquire such knowledge
- Well-developed interpersonal skills with extensive experience in commercial negotiations
- Proven ability to manage large complex legal matters including the instruction of external legal service providers
In return BUMA Australia will offer you competitive remuneration, and perhaps more importantly an opportunity to work in a nimble and growing business where you have a greater chance of making an impact and influencing systems, policies and decisions.
As you’d expect in an organisation of our size and scope, we also provide a range of additional benefits such as support for continuous personal and professional development.
