Downer manages and maintains road networks across Australia and manufactures and supplies products and services to create safe, efficient and reliable journeys.
We are a leading manufacturer and supplier of bitumen-based products and an innovator in the sustainable asphalt industry and circular economy, using recycled products and environmentally sustainable methods to produce asphalt. This includes Reconophalt, Australia's first asphalt product containing soft plastics, toner and high recycled content derived from waste streams that would otherwise be bound for landfill or stockpiled.

About the program
Our Cadet Program offers first and second year undergraduate students the opportunity to work within the teams in Downer’s Road Services business division, gaining industry experience working on live projects within our civil infrastructure productions and contracting teams, laboratory, commercial, and finance teams.
We support you to acquire new skills and learning aligned to your area of studies and encourage you as you grow and develop industry knowledge and networks – so that you are industry ready as you complete your studies.

You will be mentored by industry experts, get your hands dirty on site, build networks and gain experience working for large organisation.
What will I get to do?
The program typically runs for three years, comprising of a compulsory block of full time work during the summer break, with the opportunity for casual work throughout the rest of the year. The full time work is constructed as placements (structured rotations) in different areas of the Road Services business including working with
- Crews delivering contracting projects onsite
- Project Engineers and Project Managers
- Contract Managers
- Production teams at our asphalt plants
- Major Project teams delivering airport projects
- Laboratory
- Finance
- Commercial
When does it start?
Our Cadet Induction is scheduled for Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th November 2023. All successful candidates for the Cadet Program must be available for this mandatory Induction.
Program eligibility
You are eligible for the Cadet program if you are enrolled in your first or second year of an undergraduate degree, studying in discipline/s of:
- Engineering
- Finance (Accounting)
- Commerce
- Occupational Health & Safety
- Science
- You must be available on the 27th and 28th November 2023 for Cadet Induction
- Available for full time work from the Induction days through to late February 2024 prior to the recommencement of university semester. Note: subsequent years of the Cadet Program you will be required to be available for full time work for the same period (i.e late November to late February)
- Have permanent work rights in Australia
- Hold a current Australian Driver’s Licence
