Our Exciting Opportunity:
We are looking for an experienced stenographer/stenocaptioner who shares our love of sport, politics, news, and current affairs.
Stenocaptioners are responsible for providing captions for a wide range of television programming and other audio-visual media in a way that conveys the intentions and information of the original program to viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing or otherwise reliant on the service. A demonstrably excellent standard of English is essential, including spelling and grammar.
Our production teams operate in the broadcast environment, providing services (almost) 24 hours a day, including weekends and public holidays. Stenocaptioners must be prepared and able to work to rosters covering a range of shifts which have early starts or late finishes. Prospective stenocaptioners should note that shifts may need to be varied according to operational need and that, while rosters are issued in advance, late changes are sometimes requested to cover client needs.
In this role, you would:
- To interpret the soundtrack of media and edit it into clear, easy-to-read captions which retain the full sense and flavour of the original.
- To work accurately and calmly to very tight deadlines and during live work.
- To proofread, review and correct your own work as well as other captioners’ work, ensuring a consistently high standard and adherence to client requirements and house styles.
- To work effectively as part of a captioning team.
- To take responsibility for the quality and timely delivery of your own work at all times.
As our ideal candidate, you will have:
- An understanding of the difficulties hearing-impaired people face when watching television.
- An interest in, and a wide knowledge of, a range of current affairs and television output, and an awareness of ongoing developments in the broadcasting industry.
- An awareness of, and interest in, the work of Red Bee Australia Access Services.
- Excellent standard of English, including spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to convey complex ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing.
- Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to listen to respeak the soundtrack of television programs or media at the appropriate level of accuracy.
- Receptiveness to constructive feedback.
