Today, we have 750,000+ customers and more than A$8B under administration. Join us as we continue to reshape the financial industry, inspire investor confidence and unleash the investor in everyone.

About the role

We are looking for an Engineering Technical Lead to join our Engineering team in Sydney.

This is a pivotal leadership role within Stake. You'll lead the team responsible for some of our most important customer experiences, helping shape the technical, operational and cultural foundations that support our next phase of growth.

As an Engineering Technical Lead, you'll sit at the intersection of engineering excellence, product thinking and people leadership. You'll lead a high-performing team of engineers while partnering closely with Product, Design, Operations, Risk and Compliance to deliver experiences that are reliable, intuitive and built for scale. From architecture and platform decisions through to customer outcomes and team development, you'll play a key role in defining what great engineering leadership looks like at Stake.

This role offers significant ownership and influence. You'll help shape technical direction, improve how teams operate and contribute to the long-term evolution of Stake's platform and engineering culture. We work hybrid spending 3 days in our beautiful, dog-friendly Sydney office.

What success looks like

Within your first two years at Stake, you will have:

  • Built and developed a high-performing engineering team with a strong culture of ownership, accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Delivered meaningful improvements to reliability, scalability and customer experience across the products and systems your team owns.
  • Established clear technical direction and architectural standards that support Stake's long-term growth ambitions.
  • Created predictable delivery practices that balance quality, speed and operational excellence.
  • Improved operational health through stronger observability, incident management, risk mitigation and engineering processes.
  • Built trusted partnerships across Product, Operations, Risk and Compliance, helping teams move quickly while maintaining strong customer outcomes.
  • Developed engineers into stronger technical contributors and future leaders within the organisation.
  • Contributed meaningfully to Stake's broader engineering strategy, culture and organisational growth.

You’ll thrive here if…

  • You have experience leading engineering teams and understand how to balance people leadership, delivery and technical decision-making.
  • You care deeply about customer outcomes and use them to guide prioritisation and engineering trade-offs.
  • You bring strong technical judgement and can confidently navigate architecture, platform and operational decisions.
  • You thrive in fast-moving environments and enjoy solving complex problems with imperfect information.
  • You know how to create alignment across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • You combine ambition with pragmatism, focusing on what creates the greatest long-term impact for customers and the business.

Bonus if you’ve ever

  • Built or scaled customer-facing financial products.
  • Worked in investing, trading, fintech or another highly regulated industry.
  • Led teams responsible for high-availability, mission-critical systems.
  • Managed complex third-party integrations, vendors or platform partnerships.
  • Helped scale engineering organisations through periods of significant growth.
  • Been an active investor and developed a deep understanding of customer expectations within investing products.

Benefits of working at Stake

You’ll have the opportunity to work with autonomy while learning from some of the best talent in the industry, playing a meaningful role in building a company that has loads of positive momentum and excitement around it. Having said that, we also have perks. Please see on our Careers website the list of benefits under our Grow with Stake program.
