Melbourne is a city on the rise, and its public transport system is key to shaping a connected and sustainable future. Through major initiatives like the Metro Tunnel and Level Crossing Removal projects, we're making travel safer, more efficient, and integrated.

We are seeking a full-time Senior Track & Civil Design Engineer to join our team on a permanent basis, based at MTM’s Docklands head office.

Perform Track & Civil design activities—primarily supporting renewal projects—and conduct thorough design reviews and checks of work produced by others to ensure alignment with Metro’s engineering principles, standards, and operational requirements.

What We Offer

  • Join a high‑performing engineering team delivering critical upgrades across Melbourne’s rail network.
  • Enjoy stable, long‑term career growth with a permanent role in a major rail operator.
  • Make a real impact by shaping safe, reliable, and future‑ready track & civil infrastructure for millions of passengers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of design activities relating to the development of Track & Civil design, including drawings, design reports, engineering calculations, and other outputs as necessary to provide assurance that the design meets MTM requirements.
  • Check and approve Track & Civil designs as an MTM approved SOC.
  • Apply infrastructure, engineering standards and system specifications to prepare designs.
  • Identify and assist in resolving non-conformances with the design standards or the operational requirements and provide the Track & Civil Design Review Manager a recommendation on granting of waivers.
  • Provide technical advice on projects to other officers/divisions and external parties as directed
  • Adherence to all legislative and regulatory requirements including conducting and participating in Safety in Design, risk assessments, and peer reviews as required.
  • Assist with the preparation of MTM Management of Change and Engineering Change Processes.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering, meeting the eligibility requirements for membership with Engineers Australia, or an equivalent technical qualification supported by demonstrated industry capability acceptable to MTM.
  • Registered Professional Engineer of Victoria (RPEV) accreditation.
  • Experience using design software and drafting including Bentley Microstation is required.
  • MTM‑endorsed Designer and Checker competencies.
  • Proven ability to apply structured risk management processes across engineering activities and design decisions.
  • Strong capability to collect, analyse, interpret, and present engineering data to support informed decision‑making.
  • Well‑developed written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with staff and management at all levels.
  • Demonstrated commitment to rail industry safety, including adherence to occupational health, safety, and environmental procedures.
  • Effective time management and task prioritisation skills, with the ability to work independently and meet competing deadlines.

Recruitment Process
