About Metro

Metro Moves Melbourne.

Metro Trains Melbourne is an essential service and the franchise operator of the metropolitan railway network.

Metro operates, maintains, and builds the rail network.

A strategic priority is providing a great passenger experience – so, passengers are at the heart of everything Metro does.

They also partner with the State Government to build city-shaping projects.

With more than 7,000 team members across Melbourne, Metro has strong values that are grounded in operating Safely Always.

Why Join Metro?

Our Purpose

We Move Melbourne.

Our Vision

Shaping our future to be a world-class railway for Melbourne.

Our Values and Behaviours

At the core of everything we do are our values and behaviours of Safely Always, Caring, One Team, Dependable and Make a Difference.

Culture thrives when people really live it. We set standards for how we define ourselves, and then we set goals for how we want to grow. Our people not only help us define those principles, but they also live those values.

Diversity & Inclusion at Metro

At Metro, we strive to reflect the community that we serve. This means committing to a more diverse and inclusive workplace.

In the last 10 years, we’ve more than doubled the number of women at Metro.

We want to create a diverse team and that means being a strong advocate for initiatives that encourage more women to join; it also means listening to women on the team about how to make their work experience better and retain their expertise.

It is important to point out that women at Metro are contributing to all areas of the business and busting the myth that careers in rail are just for men.

In 2020 year, 74 per cent of our roles were filled by women. In 2009, there were 26 female train drivers working for Metro Trains – and in 2025 there are more than 580.

Keeping track of these targets, celebrating positive outcomes and pushing for more, is part of Metro continuing on its inclusive future.

Corporate Responsibility

Metro’s rail network is closely linked with the lives of millions of people across Melbourne. We work to have a positive community impact in and around the network through a range of different programs.

These programs include an annual community grants round, as well as support for fundraising efforts at our stations.

Our Benefits

Metro Trains has a wide variety of benefits for our employees, these include:

Training and Development

Metro is committed to developing its colleagues. Metro has a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) called the Metro Academy.

Metro has also been the recipient of recent awards including for being Large Employer of the Year in the Victorian Training Awards.

Health, Safety and Wellbeing

Metro Trains is committed to the safety of its employees. Metro provides safe systems and has a wellbeing team that includes peer supporters and wellness advocates.

Metro offers many discounts to its employees that are promoted through the year across communications channels.

The organisation recently won awards in this space for its work with Rail R U OK? month; and also a series of on-line health sessions called Stay Connected.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

The Employee Assistance Program is a confidential service for employees and their immediate families. It offers confidential counselling – whether that be financial or psychological assistance. Metro employees are given a phone number and can access this service at any time, with no leader or manager being made aware if contact is made. It is entirely confidential.

Free travel

Metro employees are provided with a Myki card, which allows for free public transport travel within Victoria.

“I’d never been in rail prior to Metro, and it’s now been five years. For me I love the tangibility of seeing the results of your hard work. You walk onto a station, and you can see what you’ve accomplished. That’s my team. They’re really contributing.” Ms Howard says that for women to achieve their goals in the rail industry, the way forward is simple but not easy. “What I’ve found is that once you show a real interest in the work, and you understand the problems and challenges, then you can earn your stripes.” She says one area of focus for the future to ensure more women can reach leadership roles is more coaching and mentoring. “I think we need to have the support in place so we can help people reorientate once they enter the industry and provide an anchor point for them.”
